I would also recommend the NJ transit if there is only 2 of you as it will work out cheaper. Otherwise I would recommend a town car transfer. You can book carmel cars online before you go and they will meet you at the airport.
I have used both; train when just the 2 of us and town car when there were 4 of us.
Have a look on the New York thread as it has all the details on there about the train and car service.:)

There is also the Newark Liberty Express Bus that takes you to/from the airport, with three stops which are Port Authority (42nd & 8th), Bryant Park or Grand Central. Grand Central would probably be your best bet (depending on your cross street). It costs $25 for a return ticket, you buy it at the desk at arrivals or on the bus which stops right outside the terminal. No problems or hassle!

Why is there a concensus going for Penn station when Grand Central is closer to my hotel?

Because the train you get from Newark Airport goes into Penn Station not Grand Central. You asked for info on how to get into the city from the airport and there have been plenty of suggestions to help you out :j :) We stayed on Lexington Ave at 49th which is certainly closer to Grand Central Station as well, but we just took a cab from Penn Station to the hotel - it cost around $8.
  • I'd second the Newark Liberty Express bus service. We found it easy and great value :-)

    Have a great time, OP!
From Starrystarrynight to Starrystarrynight1 and now I'm back...don't have a clue how!

I'll third that suggestion, we did it last month and it was easy, particularly as our hotel was literally around the corner from The Port Authority drop off/pick up point.

Good value and the chinese driver on our return to EWR was very entertaining, although I don't think he intended to be :D
