Hammy died yesterday :(

Well my darling little russian dwarf hamster died yesterday, it was possibly one of the most heartbreaking things Ive ever had to see....

She was ill about 2 weeks ago, vets said it was an infection, given common antibiotics and was told she would most likely get better....he mentioned that she had a lump on her belly but he never said anything else about it....

The infection didn't get better and me and OH agreed that it was mostly likely the lump causing the problems along with her age (almost 2yrs), and agreed that we'd see out her days, but I didnt realise how quick it would be :( she was her usual silly self on saturday, and come sunday morning she wouldn't move, curled up in a ball in her house but still breathing....that evening she was no better and we phoned the emergency vet line who told us to keep her warm.....she never woke up but I spent her final hour or so with her in my arms....

I know people probably think Im a bit silly getting this upset over a hamster but she was like our child.....

sorry just needed to get it off my chest :(

I'm sorry for your loss and there is nothing silly about being upset over her passing. I only have dogs at the moment but all pets that I have ever had (hamsters, fish and birds) have been part of the family, as they should be.

    All the best.
  • Aww, it's always heartbreaking to lose a pet-friend :(. I cried when we lost our goldfish. I hate to see anyone (human or animal) poorly, or worse. So you aren't alone :). Your little Hammy was obviously well loved and cared for x

I'm sorry to hear that. I'm a grown woman and I cried my face off for weeks after my wee hamster pal died. He had a lump too and vet said he could operate but he died on the table from shock. I brought him home from the vets and buried him in the garden. That was years ago now but I still remember him with a lot of love.

There's nothing wrong with your feelings. The hurt will pass though, I promise.

I'm so sorry you've lost Hammy.

It's understandable that you're upset, not silly at all.

You obviously loved her and cared for her very much xx
  • Not silly, you don't love little pets less just because they are small (just as well, where would babies be if that were how it worked!). Sorry to hear about this, but it sounds like quite a quick and peaceful way for her to go.

Does anyone know what the lumps would be? My little dwarf hamster passed away in June, she had a lump on her belly too. She was a grand old age (about 3 1/2) and deteriorated quickly.

Tumours usually but they're not always cancerous, they can be benign too.

  • So sorry to hear about Hammy, it's the worst thing about being a pet owner.

They bring such joy and we get so attached it's heartbreaking when they have to leave us.

RIP little Hammy :( Thats so sad, but you did the best thing any owner can do - be there for their pet in the final hours. Its heartbreaking but a testament to your love for him. She was your baby, pets big and small are equally important, and your hamster was very lucky to have an owner like you who cared for her deeply. So many pets don't have that luxury.
