Compassionate Leave - advice?

  • Sorry to hear about your Grandad.
Often compassionate leave is at the discretion of your Manager, so I suggest that you go in tomorrow, as you cannot do anything yet, and explain the situation, and try to get in whenever you can. i.e. don't take a whole day off for a 1 hour appointment. It does not mean you think any less of your Grandad, often work can take your mind off it for a while.

My employers give 5 days for immediate family (parent, mother, child or sibling) and then 1 day for grandparents, aunts uncles etc. I think that is about the norm but then it depends from companyt to company. Do you have your copy of your contract of employment? It will say on there.

Sorry for your sad loss aswell.

sorry about your bereavement, depend who you work for, from 2 days to a week paid leave is the Norm, any unpaid leave has to be negotiated with you HR or line manager any problem speak to your union rep.

We have guidelines as work as to how much time people can get off, however they are just that, guidelines.

I have always assessed each case and the impact the bereavement has on an individual. I personally allow people to take as much time as they think they will need. No one has ever abused this and I think it is petty to make "rules" for these sort of events.

    All the best.

  • When asking for the leave, be clear about the 2 separate circumstances:

    1. Death of a grandparent (which wouldn't normally entitle you to much compassionate leave time)

    2. Supporting your sick mum and making the arrangements etc.

If necessary you are probably ENTITLED to at least one day's dependent's leave to take care of your mum (this does not have to be paid, though). More generous employers will pay both kind of leave, so you might get an extra day's leave to 'sort your mum out' (undertaking special duties because she has been ill, not because she's been bereaved, of course).

    Hope this helps - JM

Sorry to hear about your loss.

We get 5 days special leave per year and compassionate leave is down to discretion.

Sorry to hear about your loss. My Grandad died earlier this year - I took one day annual leave for the funeral. My employer gives, I think, up to 5 days compassionate leave for an immediate relative (child, parent, sibling, spouse) but it is unpaid.

So, if I worked where you work and my wife was to die I could actually get 5 days unpaid leave. Where the hell do you work??
  • Hi inspiremetosave,

First off, sorry to hear about your granddad.....I lost mine earlier this year, and still feel like a part of me has gone :(

I would get one day for attending a funeral and up to three (additional) days "compassionate" leave....although this is usually open to discretion from your manager and HR as well.

You have been at your company for a while so I doubt they will think you're taking the mick - I would urge you to speak with your manager and HR (have you been able to do so yet? I know it was only yesterday you posted.....)

One of my team lost her father earlier this year and they took three weeks off to recover - partly signed off by their GP. There are no absolutely fixed rules normally, as long as you keep your work informed and are open and honest about things.....

Take care of yourself.....PM me if you want to talk......
