Hello,
Is there a general rule as how long you can have off paid if a relative dies? I lost my Grandad today and left work as soon as I heard the news. The problem is that my mom has just had an operation so I will need to make the funeral arrangements etc. I work for a big company and have been there for 2.5 years.
Thanks in advance for any advice.

3 days at full pay is pretty standard from what I gather. Sorry to hear about your grandad. I lost my mum last year and DH recently lost his nan.

I think we would get 1 day for a grandparent. The early bird gets the worm but the second mouse gets the cheese :cool:0

Sorry to hear about your grandad. I think it'll depend on your company and also your manager's discretion a lot of the time- i.e. we get 3 days for an immediate family member but nothing for a grandparent however as a manager I'd let my staff take the 3 days for a grandparent, or longer if they needed it to make arrangements etc.
Hope it all goes ok for you xDebt at highest May 2006: £27,472.24

when my gran died about 4 years ago i got 3 days off then a day for the funeral0 -
Our leave was allocated officially as one day for making arrangements and one day for the funeral for an immediate relative.. but at the managers descretion you could take as much annual leave as needed ..#6 of the SKI-ers Club :j

If you feel pressured to return to work for financial reasons it would be worth a visit to a sympathetic GP. Bereavement effects people differently and if you feel that you are not ready to return to work, most GP's will sign you off for a few days until you are well enough to return.0

I'm still very upset about it but I'm worried that work will just think I'm taking the mick, I'm ummimg and arring about going in tomorrow or not as I can't do anything until post mortem has been done. He was only in his 60s.Targets for 2014 :

Sorry to hear about your loss.
If you feel up to it, go into work. It shows willing and your manager may well send you home.Official DFW Nerd Club - Member no: 203.0 -

I know what you mean and I used to be the same with taking time off work.
Am at the stage now where I put myself first. I have lost count of the times I have gone into work feeling like s*** and nobody ever thanks you for it. Work will still be there when you feel the time is right to return. Family always comes first to me now.0 -
I'm sorry to hear about your grandad, my thoughts are with you and your family
In February my baby nephew passed away and I got a week off for that, however my dad passed away 5 days later and therefore I got another week off on top of the first week.
I think the second week was down to my manager's discretion, I think I could have taken longer but I went back to work after the funerals. I work under the Government by the way (Probation).
Hope this helps.
