How many of the people who compain about bankers bonuses could do the job themselves?

I don't think people really 'get' the fact that in general (founders might be an exception) CEO's of multinationals aren't just random blokes off the street. They are people with proven track records who managed to convince the higher ups they were worth taking a punt on. Bob Diamond isn't paid £6m for !!!!!! and giggles, that's money straight off the bottom line for Barclays. He's paid that because they'd have to pay the same or more for someone of his calibre.

The whole industry is renowned for nepotism.

Perhaps, but that is pretty average compensation for someone in his position. However the vast, vast majority of people who work in banks will only get the usual 3-10% bonus based on performance.

This is the bit that stood out the most for me. What's wrong with these people, and indeed society? Whydoesn't there come a point where people say ok I've got enough now?

Putting it another way I'm sure lots of people couldn't do thetraders job you seem to be getting at some on grounds of ability some on other grounds eg if family is important those kind of hours are going to destroy it.

Not everyone wants that from their lives though.
Put it this way, Bob Diamond could retire now and live the rest of his life in absolute bliss flying around the world doing near enough whatever he likes.

It's all about compromise, and some would rather work their !!!!!! off in early life to reap the rewards. Or maybe they truly are workaholics and like to work hard?
