New Car Problems?

Had my 06/56 Peugeot 207 GT a couple of days and there are a few issues I could do with some advice on as my mechanical knowledge is almost zero sad.gif

First is when I start the car from cold I get a fair amount of white smoke that disappears after a minute or 2. I know this could be down to the time of year but it did it earlier after the car was still warm but again soon disappeared.

Second after a good run the engine smells hot not in the cabin but outside ( if that makes sense?). The temp gauges all seem good both going to half way.

Finally I thought I would check the coolant and it was just under the min line. I have a feeling all of the above are connected, I don't think it's a head gasket as there is no water in the oil. I am hoping someone with more knowledge than me will be able to clarify what it could be?

The car seems to be running ok, no loss if power etc..

Thanks in advance
Jim

White smoke sounds like a Turbo Failure to me.

Would this not affect performance though?

As far as I can tell it is running and performing fine.

I am going to top up the coolant tonight and see if there are any leaks.

This also might indicate oil mixing with gas and burning up inside the engine.
Or you might have to change the piston rings.

    Car has done 22k

The thing with the smoke is it's gone after a minute or so which leads me to believe it could just be condensation and the cold weather? I noticed a lot of cars this morning doing the same thing.

Normally blue smoke when a turbo goes a i burns oil.

I've got a petrol turbo engine - they do get hotter than most other engines. I notice it takes an age to cool down.

blueish smoke can be a sign of turbo failure not white.

white smoke can also be valve stem seals, piston rings, or HG failure cat converter, lambda sensor.

OP if your low on water do as you should top it up but check the level of the water periodically, if your losing water, your head gasket may have failed and the milky oil cap doesnt always apear.
i have allot of condensation in the exhaust wich pours out the back end but not losing oil or water its just that the air is cold and exhaust and when heat rapidly warms air tadaa it condesates.
so ill put my money on just being cold.

Sounds to me like the OP mainly does short journey's.... Resulting in condensation in the exhaust system.

Eventually the exhaust will rot from the inside out, but at 22k miles (if that's genuine????) I can't see there being a major fault like a HG failure.

The only thing I will say is that due to it's age more than it' mileage, the old Peugeot electrical problems are probably about to start giving you a hell of a time.

Thanks for the replies all :)

I topped up the coolant last night and I will monitor over the next few days.

I have no reason to question the mileage as has FSH and looks to have been a very well looked after car which is why I am more concerned about the lack of coolant, is it something that does evaporate over time? The next service is due in the next couple of hundred miles but I would not imagine it would drop so low unless there was a leak somewhere.

I am less worried about the smoke now as it soon dissapears and condenasation/cold weather seems more likely and is affecting everyone on my estate :)

I have advised the dealer of the low coolant and advised me to bring it straight back if the level drops after topping up.
