Ski-ing for 5 night in Feb? Dont know where to book it!

Hi all,

We would like to go Ski-ing in February for 5 nights, but all the websites ive been on only allow 7 nights.

We are first timers, never even been near a ski before so want somewhere fairly easy and not too far away. We are in London. I was thinking maybe Meribel in France or Borovets in Bulgaria. Hopefully half board would be better. I dont really want to go to a travel agents as i think they are too expensive!

I'm really hoping (and being a bit cheeky here) that one of you lovelies will come up with a few quotes for me! :)

Thanks to anyone who can help.

  • Sorry forgot to add, would like to go Thursday 8th-Tuesday 13th Feb ideally, but anytime around then but with only having to take 4 working days off work!
  • Please can anyone help?
  • DO NOT GO TO BOROVETS.

Its horrible enough for an experienced skier, not the place for a first timer, plus its horrible.

Try igluski, just google it. I go through those a lot, austria is the best place to go for first timers, IMO, try st Johnan, or kitzbuhel.
A man never needs to ask for directions, we always get to where we intended to go, and at exactly the time expected. :T
  • I went with my OH to Soll in Austria - fantastic snow, great apres ski and great ski school - highly recommend
  • Can anyone suggest a place where i can book it just for 5 nights? All of the websites seem to be 7 only! Also, worried about transfers etc..
  • All the main ski sites such as crystal and thomson can book you a short gettaway - try looking at their websites and calling - sure it said something like this in the brochure - tailor made I think

I use igluski - fantastic savings.

Thoroughly recommend Soll - huge ski area, good ski school, nice place

But lots of great places in Austria and France. I've also done Borovets - very very cheap but limited ski area, hotel food was awful, and very very noisy resort.

If you are first timers you really need to book ski/boot hire/skischool package as well or you may spend your time being cold, wet and with much bruising from all the falls! Hate to point it out but the time you mention is half term and therefore the MOST popular and expensive time of the ski-season. Good luck.
Just because somebody is certain doesn't mean they are right!
  • Sarahpuggy,

I tried to do this over xmas and NYE and cut up the week and every tour operator tried to charge us for an extra week or simply wouuldn't do it (most of the afroew mentioned ones above too)

my advice is steer clear of tour operators, you'll drive yourself mad speaking to them!

So, I researched this subject for about 2 months solid and your best bet is to get a cheap flight to friedrichschafen with ryanair and stay in a guesthouse in either west austria (St anton, Solden etc) or hotels in east switzerland (davos, kloisters, flims, laax etc) - they will all do one off nights and split up the week for the dates you want- except for xmas and NYE weeks and will be taking bookings now for the time you want to go.

Use the cheap flight finder on this site to get the best flight deal.
    http://flightchecker.moneysavingexpert.com/
(they are £3.60 + tax at the moment! (yes!, 'three pounds sixty' plus tax)

Guest houses range from £20-£50 a night per person inc B&B (some with dinner too and are all of exceptionally high standard in Austria - switzerland can be expensive -£50- £100)

go to https://www.worldsnowboardguide.com and look for resorts you like in northern alps then click the link to the local website where you will find practically every room in the resort direct!

Friedrichschafen is the cheapest airport to get to the alps with ryanair!!

Hire a car from friedrichschafen airport - takes 2 hours to get to most resorts in the northern alps.
you can get the car hire people direct from here (cheper than going through tour operator) http://www.fly-away.de/en/

Alternatively, you can get the train direct to st anton in austria from the airport with a short bus journey.

I managed to arrange a 10 day holiday in Austria over xmas and NYE with this method - conventional tour operators would do it for £1400 pp - I did it for £800 pp

so, using a similarish method, a quick costing of your trip (as requested)

    GH price pp pday £20
    GH 4 nights pp £80
    ryanair from standstead
    to Friedrichshafen £30 (inc tax)
    Train/bus £40 return

    Total £248 per person

This is the cheapest possible route to take for the dates you want!

Don't forget to add extras such as ski pass, ski hire, car hire and food/beer money if the hotel doesn't include it in the price And don't forget the all important insurance with ski cover ( https://www.insureandgo.com are the cheapest with ski cover £6.00 per person) otherwise you may end up with a £20,000 bill for helicopter transfer off the slopes and hospital treatment if you break a leg.

i.e. Get insurance, It can't be stressed enough!!

All said, the important thing is to have fun!!

  • Try the Easyjet website. Alongside flights they also offer "odd" skiing days (ie. not full weeks).
