Thanks for all the comments above.

I've got my rat entry point wrong! It's further to the left where the 2 pipes are sticking up and the one is leaning on its side (half way along the red line).

Sorry about that!! so, it looks as though a lintel was never put in place?

I bet if you had taken the photo a day or two later the lintels would of been in place.
    :)

Expanding foam and some decent poison should do the trick, I get the industrial stuff as a mate deals with the railways and said don't bother with the DIY store stuff.

The rat is no longer with us. I bought the poison from B&Q. It took the poison every day until I saw it slowly crawl back into the hole...Unfortunately, it's going to be rotting somewhere within the walls of the house :(

Maybe, but the issue is whether or not the gap under the lintel should have been filled in...It clearly hasn't.

You're right...there are numerous lintels all over the site.....but none where the red line is pointing.
It's clear because the pipe on the ground goes under 3 lintels and is then clearly visible right up to the lintel on the furthest away gap.
Where the red line is, the lintel is missing.

It's also missing on the photo showing the drain pipe in post 1
There is a facing block lintel in place above the pipe in the original photo.
