has anyone tried booking a train with trentitalia web site. I am having major problems. It gives a list of times but if I make a selection it says tickets not purchaseable. Any ideas?

There's no real need to book in advance for a short journey by local train. You can pay on the day using the ticket machines or counter.0

I agree, I wouldn't book such a short journey in advance. If you do, you may be tied to the times and what if you arrive early and want a different train, or later.
Just arrive and buy a ticket for the next train. I've never done that particular journey, but we did do Rome-Florence-Rimini-Milan a few years ago and Bergamo-Brescia-Desenzano more recently and bought the tickets at the train station. Our only regret was Florence to Rimini which was a thrusday or friday and at Bologna when we changed trains it was jam packed with people going to the beach for the weekend, we ended up in an aisle with suitcases and no-where we could move to, people trying to get by etc. There were loads of us in the same boat, so I guess it would only have been better in 1st class but we didn't realise.0 -
I agree with above, also there is a very good coach link from Pisa to Florence, we picked ours up from outside the airport but others got on in town, it was a good price and we waited no more than 10 minutes for the coach.

trains run hourly from venice to pisa, i got it in June 2005 and i had a pick of the seats as the train was empty.. , Also you may find pisa has very little to offer once you've taken the picture holding up the leaning tower
so an hour may suffice
In italy i always buy the ticket the day before for busy routes, if i was you I'd book any trains into venice, as i know a few friends who have had to stand, I also had to..
if you get chance get the train from venice to ljubljana 2nd class was only 6 euros 3 years ago.. an absolute bargain for 6 hours0 -

When are you booking for. Tickets on Trenitalia website only become bookable a limited time before travel. Can't remember the actual time - either three months, or thirty days.Neil0 -
just buy the tickets when you arrive. The train platform is almost an extension of the departure lounge it's that close.....:T0

In Florence, in the station, there are self serve ticket machines on which you can select English as an option during the booking. Really simple.
This was in 2003 and I think it was 6 euros return to pisa. Pisa is quite dull, so you get back on the train after you've seen the tower and surrounding buildings.Who made hogs and dogs and frogs?

Trying to book for 14th April. We don't get in to Pisa Airport until 20:50 so thought it safer to book train . However looking at the replies I have had from the forum it does not seem to be essential. Should be able to get train ticket when we arrive in Pisa.0

You will be fine (unless its a public holiday).
You can only search the timetable for Trenitalia for around 6 weeks ( I think) in advance.
As you are about to leave the aiport, turn left and walk all the way the end of the building, past the end toilets to the doors (walk in straight line to them). Right outside the door is the train platform. There is a machine to purchase tickets (big fines if you dont) and MAKE SURE to put your tickets in the little yellow boxes on the platform (or you will still get a fine - I was rushing once and forgot and got fined - it can be quite a lot).
There are buses outside the airport too and a ticket office for buses (and the trains) - though the queues are long and often when you get to the front you are told the machine to issue tickets is not working (having waited 45 mins to get to that point - typical Italy).
You 'might' have to change at Pisa Central or you might catch one of the straight through to Florence trains. Its about an hour on the train (iirc).0 -
You can book in advance. It's cheaper (the amount depends on how far advanced) but quite tricky. I booked Milan to Desenzano. One way it was the regional train and free seating (very busy, slow and hot) and the return was the inter city (quicker, cooler more expensive) on which I had to book seats. We ended up with seats on different carriages! Lucky it was quiet so we were allowed to sit together.
You can print the tickets yourself for one of the above types, the other you just have to show a reference number.
On the other hand, it is easy to buy tickets at the stations!"Beer. Now there's a temporary solution." Homer (Simpson)0
