Car Insurance for my daughters 20 year old boyfriend whose just passed

My daughters boyfriend has just passed his test and we're looking for the best insurance option for him.

Through his own enquiries the best deal he's found is £3021 to insure a Corsa life 1 litre!!

Is there any way I can help him ..... perhaps by linking to my own insurance.

I've got a 12 year old Audi but its a 2.6 litre V6 and I don't think its realistic for him to be a named driver for this vehicle.

Options we've discussed include:

....me getting a smaller car and him being a named driver but really he wants his own vehicle.

....buying an old car with an owners club membership which might reduce the cost perhaps. I think a friend of mine did this for his son with a VW beetle

.... he buys a car which I register in my name and then he gets insurance for it and I'm registered to drive it as well.

More complications down the line....my daughter will be taking her test in a months time (she's 21) so they will both be eligible to drive.

They both work and they're both saving for a place of their own. I know they have to think about asking themselves how important is a car but they want the independence it offers and it would increase his work options. His own Mum and Dad are not in a position to help and I would like to do what I can to get him on the road.

I would be very grateful for any help or advice

Quotes will depend on where he lives, occupation etc. Car insurance is very expensive for youngsters who have just passed their tests. Providing he has no accidents etc. it will usually go down after the first year.

Would not suggest you complicate matters by getting involved as insured or vehicle owner etc as in the event of a claim this leads to all sorts of enquiries by insurers in case there has been fronting.

Corsa's are not necessarilly the lowest group of car as they are favoured by the boy racer brigade! Suggest you look on Parkers to get an indication of vehicle groups and see what would be lower. Then do some quotes using search engines. Put yourself or another older female driver on the policy to bring the cost down.

At the end of the day they will have to decide how much they want/can afford a car - cheaper option might be public transport and taxis by the time the cost of vehicle, maintenance, depreciation, running costs - fuel costs are rising - etc. etc.

The first of those "options" isn't really an option at all - it sounds *very* like fronting, which is illegal and will get you and the boyfriend in a great deal of trouble if caught.

Basically fronting is where you pretend to the insurer that the older driver is the main driver, whereas in fact the main driver is the younger one. So, if you buy a smaller car with the intention that he'll drive that one and you'll keep your current one, he would have to be declared as the main driver and not just a named one.

Your plan of him buying a car and registering it in your name won't help (and may just cause hassle as to insurable interest). The insurers don't just care who owns the car, they also care who is the main driver.

A friend of mine is in a similar situation - his 18yr old son has just passed and for a 1.2 fiesta the insurance is @3500.00 - it really is ridiculous as there is no way he can afford that (inc a 700 deposit!!) - our friend is self employed so it looks like the only way to do it is to take out a traders policy, add the car as a business vehicle and have his son on the policy to (he does work with him so it wouldn't be fraud) - the father was going to take the insurance out in his name with son as named driver til we informed him about fronting (aka friendship policy btw). Its very hard for young and new drivers to get out on the road now.

I am a 23 yr old female (my bf is the same age) and when my boyfriend passed his test at 21 he went to a company called armitage young drivers insurance in the yellow pages he had a 1.2 punto active all of his own and his 1st years insurance was £980 3rd party (quite high but not ridiculous) though I do have to say when we used compare the market to check back then this quote was very close to one we got from a company called quinn ( i think ). Last year he moved to premium choice they charged £890 fully comp. This year with 2 years no claims under his belt he is with co-op for a little over £700 fc. He's getting there but i would always recommend looking at companies who specifically insure or offer young drivers insurnace.

    Hoping this helps

When I passed my test at 17, the insurance was around £25.00 per year. Hope this is helpful.

As others have said, although a Corsa may have a low insurance group, they aren't necessarily the cheapest things to insure down to the image they have.

Think of other small stuff that isn't quite as popular (I help run the Micra Sports Club and have had 4 in my time and they're quite a bit cheaper to insure compared to Corsas).

Another thing you can try (with Admiral at least) is adding a more mature female driver as a NAMED (not main) driver. At least until the new rules kick in, naming my mum as an additional driver saves me a good £50-60 a year with Admiral. I don't know WHY it works (speaking to other insurance companies they said it shouldn't help as obviously I'm the primary risk) but it does!

A 10 month bonus accelerator could help too, cheaper as it's only for 10 months, and you get a years no claims at the the end of it!

I can't believe how much the prices have gone up though, I only passed 7 years ago but it was "only" £1100 for a year.

    Best of luck though :)

    James.

It would be worth playing with an online form for a while- having both your daughter and her boyfriend on the can insurance might be cheaper than just one or the other. I think it gives the insurance people ideas about stable lives...
