not with the cost of parts,or do you know everything about cars

    ???

Assuming it's the clutch that has failed, the part costs £100.

An average garage will charge £30/hour (some as low as £20, others as high as £40 perhaps).

So to get to £400, you'd be talking 10 hours' labour (£100 for the part plus 10 lots of £30 for the labour).

Typically, clutches take around four hours to fit (assuming this is an ordinary car that doesn't require the engine to come out to replace the clutch). So £100 plus 4 lots of £30 is £220. Adding a bit (or a lot) for profit and you get £250-300, but a garage is unlikely to be adding much more than £30 on a £100 part, most likely only £20.

Where is my maths failing here, because I don't see it.

Also, as mentioned earlier, if it's something as simple as the hydraulics that have failed (not impossible), then you could be looking at getting change out of £100 -- the master cylinder for example would only be around £30.
  • honda are doing them at around £800 at the moment obviously this is main dealer and genuine parts. Thats what they quoted me on a civic type r but i did it my self for £140

    Thanks again folks for replying.

I took it to my local garage this morning. The owner took it for a spin and checked it over he said it definitely needs a new clutch. He quoted for the clutch and labour £360 including VAT. He said it is a long job, he always busy, but said if I dropped it off tomrrow he'd start it and finish it on Wednesday. I've accepted that offer it seems reasonable.

Thanks once again I really appreciate your help.

Edit: Just got a call from him he can start today and will have it done tomorrow.

You'd probably pay £360 for four tyres for it and I doubt you'd scrap it because it needed new tyres.

    Well worth getting it fixed.

    ^^^

Agree with this, too good a car to scrap or even get rid of.

I don't believe this just got into take it to the garage and the starter motor's gone! Garage owner just come to the house rang for price £210 plus VAT no extra labour because he'd have to take it of anyway, but now looking at £620!

He's amazed at the cost of the starter and is going to try and get a cheaper one.

    Deal or no deal?

I'm that unlucky at the moment, I daren't go for a wee in case I crap myself!

    He's found a cheaper one.

£520 now for new clutch, new starter motor and labour including VAT.

What's the betting, just as I drive from the garage, the wheel bearings will go.

    It's still dear.

What is the hourly rate at this garage? How much are they charging for the part? What is their estimate for how long the job will take?

One of these is a high figure.

The clutch £120, the starter motor £180 (both with VAT) makes labour £220.
