This nanny state culture in companys that ensures even non-diet drinks have artificial sweeteners in them is just insane.

Afraid the companies are not using it to nanny us - quite simply it's a much cheaper ingredient than sugar!

So more profit, under the guise of helping us be 'healthy'.

I particularly hate drinks where the label is plastered with 'no artificial colours, flavourings or preservatives' but no mention that it's full of artificial sweeteners!

Give me a nice E100 or E200 any day over vile aspartame.

Do you mean the My5 range (juice and water mix) ?
as the original Fruit shoots are all sugar free / low sugar.

Don't think so. There are definitely full sugar fruit shoots.

  • I stand corrected.
Although to be fair the only ones I have seen in stores have had Aspartame in. I guess I must have only picked up the low / no added sugar.
I think I will stick to the ones that I know have no hidden nasties just to be sure :).

Zorber - last time I bought a co-op own brand fizzy it was full of sweetener (non diet version). I emailed customer services to ask why and they said it was because their customers want sweeteners.

That was 2 years ago - so I am glad to hear that Co-op have moved back to real sugar too.

I think Robinsons may be changing their tune too - their High Juice range used to have sweeteners in it, and now I notice it does not. So maybe if we get lucky the rest will follow.

You can get good high juice drinks in Lidl or Aldi that are real sugar too.

Hmm this thread is interesting. I always bought the tesco no added sugar 50% high juice, which tasted great to me (from this thread I now see it has aspartame in it?) and recently went shopping at sainsbury's instead, bought their version of the same drink, two bottles. Both of them taste foul, to the point I can't stomach them. They taste as though grapefruit squash has been bottled instead of orange, OH tried it and agrees. Perhaps that is the sucralose then??
I'm at a loss of what other sugar free drinks I can get that don't have aspartame in (cancer causing, possibly, right? Amongst other things.)

If anyone has any suggestions I'd be grateful...

I have to ask, why is everyone on this thread down on aspartame?

If it's the taste fair enough, but if you think that aspartame is unsafe then you are badly informed. It's in the same class of internet truth as 9/11 being an inside job.

As usual snopes has the answer

I am a fit, healthy 37 year old woman with no food intolerance or allergies. Within half an hour of digesting aspartame in any form (liquid or gum) I am in agony with stomach cramps so severe I cannot stand up straight. One sip of aspartame laced liquid can do this to me. I drank a small bottle of fanta last year not realising it had been changed from sugar to this additive, within half an hour I was in agony, sweating profusely and had a severe headache which lasted for 2 days.

That is why I am 'down' on aspartame.

I apologise if I caused offence to you or anyone who suffers as yourself. I was too interested in dispelling the urban myth about it causing cancer etc.

Lol Dave, dont worry, your foot isn't in your mouth. Perhaps my comment came across a little churlish, it wasn't my intention :D

The Cancer thing was never an issue with me, its always been the intolerance. Funny thing was I didn't develop it until my late 20's but I suppose thinking about it, that's when aspartame became cheaper to use than sugars and more prevalent. Took a while to figure out what was causing me the pain though.
I also have an intolerance to asprin, which I've always assumed is perhaps the coating.

I don't like the stuff, and I do wonder what harm it can do if it can provoke that type of reaction, but its something I always check anyway now before I buy as not checking is a painful experience lol.
