20 year old, 1st car, car insurance....???

Options
Hello people

Maybe I am being a little premature, but it doesn't hurt to ask. Today I passed my practical test (praise God) I am so happy. I am at some point gonna get a car..(don't have a clue which one yet). But I wanna start thinking about insurance. How much I am looking at? What is the cheapest insurance company. I am female, and 20 years old, it will be my first car, I dunno what car to get yet. But I guess I could do with some advice from now before I get the ball rolling. Bear in mind I know nothing about cars, just to pass the test apparently!!

Cheers in advance

try confused.com. absolutely fantastic search engines. searches the web for the best deals. im 25 (24 at quote time) and my insurance was £400 which is wicked for my 1st quote!!! good luck chick piper5 xx
i drive a vw polo and my sister has a clio, both 1997 makes, and really reasonable on petrol. try a lower engine size for cheaper quotes aswell.. look towards a 1.0 or a 1.2 engine!!!

Well insurance comparies vary so its worth looking around, good first stop is tesco...

Decent car, may want to check out the Peugeot 106 range if your after something cheap, if you're a little more minted maybe a Ford focus?
  • Id also ask how much you would save by doing Pass Plus, an extra 5 hour tuition. You might save more than it costs. i did.
  • I'd also recommend a vauxhall corsa a very strong and reliable car, and try sheilas wheels for your insurance and well done on passing your test, I know it's very difficult and expensive these days.

    Hi first of all congratulations!!!!!!!!!!

I'm 23 passed my test last month and I have a hyundai accent 1.3 I have my insurance with norwich union which I took out on a provisional license, (they ask how long you have had your license which was 5 years, and it didn't matter that is was a provisional) I got it on a 10 month accelerator for Just over £300 but that is 3rd party fire and theft, my car isn't worth much and they say your most likely to have a prang in the first year, so my advice would be buy a cheap car for your first car. Also some companies do a pay as you drive, they install something on your car and basically they charge you for when you are on the road.

  • If you have a small engine and agree to a large excess that will keep the price down. So will being female. The insurance companies acknowledge what we have always known, that women have more sense than men. By law you must have third party insurance but you can tweak the other bits a friend who is 23 got a quote using the site on Martins page about car insurance and got loads of quotes from £720 to £2015 on a 1.8 Ford Focus all fully comp but some let you drive in Europe, some give you a courtesy car if your own is being repaired etc.

Pass plus is good and I would advise you to do it because it takes you on motorways BUT the best thing anyone can do is the Institute of Advanced Motorist test. It’s the one police drivers have to pass but anyone can take it. It costs £85 or £75 if you are under 25 but you have to have passed your ordinary test first and done a fair bit of driving. You will not pass if you are still dodgy on hill starts and have trouble reversing around a corner!
  • Some insurance companies that are ok with young'uns are, Diamond, Admiral, Tesco, Sheilas Wheels.

As for car, both my daughters drive a Kia Picanto and love them. 1.1 engine group 3 insurance.

What goes around - comes around
give lots and you will always recieve lots
  • Costs less than £40 - for as much "tuition" as you need.
A number of insurance companies offer a discount - but only if you propose your IAM member number

Thank you very much everyone... the_postman, piper5, TeamMCS, Charliecat, westbromwichalbion, lorraine, pbradley936, Davidboy and Troubleatmill. I am so grateful, for all the advice.

I am going to stick to a small engine, and check out quotes from all the insurers you mentioned.

    Cheers again!!!
