Had a upper wisdom tooth removed with LA (at the hospital admittedly, but that was just due to the fact i'd had massive jaw surgery a few weeks earlier.)

I actually asked for a LA as i'd had a bad reaction to the general and didnt want to put myself through that again.

It was fine, didnt hurt at all at the time, a small amount of discomfort and pulling but really not that bad and mine was awkward as due to the previous surgery i could bearly open my mouth.

It didnt bleed very much either - i cant really comment about the pain/swelling afterwards as was still very swollen from previous op.

Im sure it wont be half as bad as you imagine.

You should have local as well as the gas and air, that's more a sedative and pain killer top up.

~If you don't want a GA but are nervous about the gas and air, I can recommend valium sedation. I had this intravenously when I had all 4 wisdom teeth out in one go - I was awake (ish) and responsive to instructions (opoen wider, lol) apparently, but totally off this planet with no memory whatsoever of anything. I then had about a 10 minute lay down till i started coming round. Someone had to take me home, I wasn't allowed to drive or travel by myself, but well worth it. Didn't feel ill at all and it soon wore off. When it started I thought 'oh this isn't working at all, oh look at the ceiling, it's all swirly and now.......' gone.

I had all 4 of mine out in one go a few years ago. Because I was so scared about having it done, my dentist suggested intravenous sedation and LA. I have absolutely no memory of the procedure at all, other than the first two injections! The only thing is, I had mine done privately, so not sure how much different that is in terms of choice.
