Most wisdom teeth are removed with la. If you are nervous you can ask for iv sedation (injected sedative) that will relax you and in most cases you won't remember what happened. Ask when you go . Waiting lists are long in most areas months to 18 months.
Ga is used as last resort or if tooth very difficult to take out.0 -
The 1st tooth I ever took out was a wisdom tooth.
So look at all the horror stories above and think.
"If wisdom teeth are always such a nightmare would they give it to some 3rd year dental student as his 1st tooth"
Truth is there are as many different types of wisdom teeth as there are people. Big ones, little ones, impacted ones wobbly ones etc etc
See the consultant and get advice from the guy who knows about *your ones*
Everything else is just guesswork0 -
Interesting link, hope you get on ok,
I have got to have a lower wisdom tooth out soon, not looking forward to it but it needs doing, dentist said I have decay in the wisdom tooth and it needs to come out.
Having got to 37 with no fillings, I have in the past 6 months had 3 fillings and now need this tooth out. When I was in my early 20's I had the top 2 wisdoms out - went to work straight after but did struggle as I felt sick but was ok after.
I have a fairly good pain threshold but hate the noise and the injections make me feel numb and sick for about 8 hours after, but other than that I guess I'll be ok.
Dentist has said he wants to see me early in the day - so think I'll have to book a day off work, I hope I can return the next day but can have time off if needed. Not had any time off sick in several years.
I work supporting students in a college and need to be on the ball and with it - know after this for at least the rest of the day I'll be better at home.
I've decided it has to be done in March as I go away at Easter and I have a concert 17th March so best to go sometime last 2 weeks in March - seems to be easy enough to get appointments.
Think I'm worrying too much - am sure it will be fine - a bit uncomfy but knowing me I'll be back at work the next day.
Trouble is reckon I shall have to have the last remaining one out in the future - he won't do 2 at once!Sealed Pot Challenge number 8 Amount declared £365.50.

I had my wisdom teeth out when I was about 22/23 (Im in my early 40s now) as some of my friends had had them under GA and seemed to suffer a lot of bruising I opted for local anaesthetic as thought I would be able to see what the dentist was doing and wouldn't be as rough as if I was unconscious!
I had 2 out one week and 2 out a couple of weeks later and to be honest it really wasn't a big deal. My dentist is about 2 hours from where I live so I had to travel back by train on my own afterwards (dribbling blood which was a bit disconcerting for my fellow passengers!) but I was able to go to work waitressing in a busy restaurant the same evening with no problem and the holes seemed to heal over fairly quickly.
My friends who had GAs obviously took longer to recover but also had quite a lot of visible brusing and swelling whereas I had none.
Maybe I was just lucky - the worst thing for me was having the injections in my mouth as I'd never had a filling (and still haven't) so that was a bit of a shock!
Personally unless you need a GA for medical reasons I would definitely avoid it.
Good luck!0 -
Never had anything but a local (only have one wisdom tooth left). The main reason IIRC for GA is if the tooth is impacted. If not a local should be fine. The other issue is cracking during extraction. Hope you have good strong teeth and a good strong dentist. The swelling with LA is minimal. It just doesn't feel like it though.Truth always poses doubts & questions. I had a lower wisdom tooth taken out with a local a few years ago. There was much more pain from the toothache than from the extraction. And it didn't even warrant paracetamol afterwards.
I had it done in my lunch hour and went back to work in the afternoon.
I am DEFINITELY not a brave person, so it really must vary enormously. My colleague was completely astonished because he'd had a 3 day hospital stay when his were removed and flatly refused to believe me until I showed him the gummy gap !
Good luck all X0 -

Thanks will do, going on past dental treatment - removal of top wisdoms and several fillings I will be uncomfy during it - will hear the sound effects and be gripping the chair and will feel awful after - more from the effects the injections have on me - if I have it done in the morning I should hopefully feel better by the evening and fine for work the next day, getting time off won't be a problem if needed.
At the mo I only had a mild infection - it ached over Christmas on and off but know if I leave it and get another infection it will get painful so I will book in sometime this month get it over with!Sealed Pot Challenge number 8 Amount declared £365.50.
