The NI number is part of the information that any ISA provider is required to collect from you before they open your ISA.
You seem confused.
From HMRC guidance for ISA managers - http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/isa/isa-guidance-notes-2008.pdf -
"4.13 Applications must contain the investor’s
• full name (which does not have to include a middle name or initial - so an
application showing Mr John Joseph Bloggs, Mr John J Bloggs or Mr John
Bloggs is acceptable but Mr J J Bloggs or Mr Bloggs is not)
• permanent residential address, including postcode
• national insurance number, or confirmation that he or she does not have one
(ISA managers should provide a 9 character box to accommodate the format of
the number – AB123456C – (paragraph 5.14), and
• date of birth (ISA managers should provide an 8 character box so that their
investors provide the date in the format DDMMCCYY). "0 -

I've always been asked for NI number when opening an ISA.
Do you actually know what an ISA is?0 -

Do you actually know what an ISA is?
Based on the other posts by this user, it appears to be a deliberate wind up or misinformation.
Statements such as claiming inflation is a myth, stocks & shares bonds exist (but unable to find any details) and now ISAs can be opened without any info.
If an existing bank already has your NI and ISA details from before it is possible they may not ask again but unless you declare you do not have a NI number you do need to provide it to open an ISA.Remember the saying: if it looks too good to be true it almost certainly is.0 -

What I seem is to have gone through a different process to that which you describe. No confusion there.
As I said, I have opened ISAs without being asked for NI number and other such details you mention. Guess the providers didn't do their homework!!0 -
Its all very well you guys saying 'this is what needs to be given', or quoting HMRC.
Doesn't make it what ACTUALLY happens in reality though, does it?0 -
Other than Santander - who hasn't asked for your NI number?
I believe an NI number is needed to open one, and every ISA I have had has needed one - Halifax, Barclays, Egg and Aldermore (although Egg didn't ask me, they had it on file)0 -

From Santander's own website.
https://applyonline.santander.co.uk/OnlineAppsWeb/ola.htm?_flowId=isa&prod=flexible&refId=SanFisa&PPC=3017210000057
First page of the online application asks for NI number.0 -
Well, they didn't.
A link that says they do isn't a valid contradiction. I have stated what actually happened. What takes precedence, actual reality, or some words on a page?0 -
Other than Santander, none that I can remember. So it MAY just be them. I believe as someone described, for one of the others, it may have been that they already had it from when I opened my current account.
Santander doesn't have any of my details. Not even my address, let alone NI number. And yes, I do have an ISA with them that I put money into.0 -

All information available at the click of a mouse.
Santander must have your address already, otherwise they would not do business with you.0
