Safety Deposit Box !!

Guys currently I have a safety deposit box & an envelope containing deeds etc with the Ulster Bank. Just received notification that they will be starting to put up the fees to £100 + vat per annum for the box & £30 + vat for the envelope. Does anybody know of other banks who offer safe keeping & their charges for this service, I would be very very reluctant to keep this stuff at home. Any information would be great , many thanks Harpo:exclamati

at that price it may be worth just buying a proper safe to keep at your own house?

Do you need to keep deeds at all? Can you not register the property? In England, this takes the place of deeds which, though still of interest, then have no value.

    You sure about that?
I started with nothing and I am proud to say I still have most of it left.

The envelope is a big tough manila enevope that carries the deeds. The box is about 8 in by 3in by 6in so the envelope can't fit the box. I'm not sure about the deeds & registry. The house is half of a pair of semis & I think I might need the detail sometime. Has anybody else got a box ? or knows now much it costs in other banks? Thanks again Harpo

Deeds are available online from the Land Registry for a small fee. You can even check online that your property is registered in your name. I doubt whether there is a need for elaborate security arrangemnents - mine are stuck in a drawer somewhere - but clearly you need to research the matter further yourself and you should start by searching the Land Registry site. Alternatively buy a small safe and bolt it to the wall and floor. Plenty of these available from large B and Q stores such as these here:

Take my advice at your peril.

It looks as though that would be LandWeb Direct (prev Land Registers Northern Ireland) where the OP lives http://www.lrni.gov.uk/
  • Safety deposit boxes - not as safe as you might think:

Barclays has admitted it has no idea where staff have misplaced a customer's safety deposit box containing almost £200,000 worth of valuables and cash.

Customer Tahir Khan said today he was at his 'wits end' over the missing savings, which have been under lock and key in the bank's care for more than a decade.

Mr Khan has accessed the box 12 times since he started using it in 1999, but when he arrived at a Barclays branch in Wolverhampton last week and requested access to it, bosses admitted they could not find the box or its contents.

Staff at the Queen Square branch of the bank said all safety deposit boxes had been checked and none contained Mr Khan's belongings.

Barclays head of corporate affairs Lisa Kennedy today admitted the branch manager was 'unable to locate' the box.

She said: 'We take situations such as this very seriously and have launched an investigation. We appreciate this situation will be causing concern and we will look to conclude this investigation as quickly as possible.'

We keep our house deeds/land registry paperwork in a Sentry MS3817 Fire-Safe, which is bolted to a concrete floor under the stairs.

Plenty of room to store quite a bit of stuff.
Just checking the cost of these safes today - they sure have gone up in price since 2002.
It would be cheaper though, than paying for two years fees for the bank safety deposit box & envelope.
