Can garages do this
Comments
-
No, and please try to stay calm.
The garage has signed up to a deal in full possession of all of the relevant information. If they wish to break that deal, and simply return the deposit, they are putting the OP at a disadvantage. For a start, there is the cost of his visit(s) to the garage, the time he spent negotiating, all of which will have to be repeated elsewhere.0 -
So what level of "compensation" would you expect?
I seriously doubt they'll give him anything at all.0 -
What loss has the OP occurred?
You can equally say the same thing about the dealers but they will keep your deposit if you opt out, time is money, also the OP may have missed out on a better deal.0 -

...... and he may have missed out on a much worse deal, can you prove either way?
It's all speculative, and exactly why the dealer will return the deposit and tell the OP to foxtrot oscar if he starts whining about compo.0 -

Why are most people on the side of the dealer..(well other dealers are).
If it were the other way round and the OP had gone back and said I though the X trail was a different model to the one you are selling me, so I want my deposit back. What would the dealer say.
The OP didnt make the mistake he was upfront and IMo the dealer should honour it.
Who is the dealer?0 -

Who is the dealer?
I'm not a car dealer and have no connection with the motor trade whatsoever. I actually despise the vast majority of the trade and think it needs vast reform to eradicate the amount of dodgy dealing that still goes on.
That said, if the dealer is incompetent when it comes to offering a P/X price etc what's to say they'll not be just as incompetent when preparing the car for sale etc? I'd be happy to take my deposit elsewhere if they showed such signs.0 -

You know fine well the dealer would say either you complete the deal or you lose your deposit and that would be fair since the customer is breaking the contract and is the one out of pocket.
In the OP's case, the dealer wants to break the contract but not be out of pocket. He can't have his cake and eat it.
And I have no connection to the motor trade either.
