Can garages do this

I would expect the garage to honour the original deal even if they have made a mistake. I think they are trying it on with you tbh. If they are not prepared to honour the deal i would ask for my deposit back and walk away.
Which is exactly the option the dealer has given the OP.The greater danger, for most of us, lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short; but in setting our aim too low and achieving our mark0 -
completely different scenario.
in your example car owner deliberately deceiving the dealer to get a higher price and therefore comitting a fraud....and it wouldn't be a mistake...it would be a lie
The OP has gone into a dealer, showed the V5 and the vehicle, agreed a trade in price, paid a deposit...deal complete, negotiations finished.
The dealer cannot now change it because he feels like it....the mistake is nothing to do with the OP or the deal that was agreed and as such the dealer should accept the hit.
I didn't write that OP had deliberately deceived the dealer. I was giving an example where this may have been a possibilty. The greater danger, for most of us, lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short; but in setting our aim too low and achieving our mark0 -

I realise you weren't saying the OP did this but you can't compare the two scenarios because they're completely different.
In your scenario a customer goes into a dealer, claims to be drivng an SX when it's really an LX.
In the OP's scenario, he's gone in with the V5, presented his car, got a price and now the dealer wants to renege on the deal.

Oh for heaven's sake, I was just suggesting a scenario where mistakes can be made. My initial post on the matter, to which you were originally referring to, was based on that assumption. Or are you just arguing for the sake of it.
BTW, I belive it is against the spirit of the forum rules to advertise a business within your signature. The greater danger, for most of us, lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short; but in setting our aim too low and achieving our mark0 -

Can you point out which business I'm advertising please?

A business???
ok....what's the name of my "business"?
where is it based?
how do you access it?
what do I sell?
is it camera gear or prints or frames or do i take photos for people?
It's there as a bit of back up to any advice I give in the photography forum that I have a bit of clue of what I'm talking about.
If you feel it's against the spirit then feel free to report it....you're the first person that's ever mentioned it....in all the time I've been here.

Take back the deposit and walk away.If the dealers being like this now, imagine what he'll be like if something goes wrong with the car.Theres thousands of cars out there-go get another one.No more squabbles everyone, problem sorted, end of thread.;)Went shoplifting at the Disneystore today.

I'm with darich on this. There has been no attempt to deceive the garage. If the garage has cocked up and no longer wishes to do the deal on the terms they agreed, they should compensate the OP in some manner in addition to returning the deposit. Opinion only.0
