Cheap/free international texts (from an iPhone)

Does anyone know of a way to send cheap or free texts to the USA from an iPhone? Orange charge a ludicrous amount per text, and I was wondering if there was an app or way to circumvent it!

Alternatively, could anyone recommend the cheapest text to the US sim card which I could put in my old phone?

Looks great, but the person I want to text to doesn't have a smartphone themselves (which I think it looks like you need with WhatsApp)

Great recommendation though, am downloading it for use with others!

I think there may be some difference for US, but not for a iPhone.

I use an app called jellysms from the AppStore i swear by it cause it even gives me a delivery report for my international texts. After installing the app though you will be offered an option to choose a provider to supply you the sms credit in my case i chose mycoolsms and it costs me about 2p for an international text.

Thanks everyone. Going to see if fishtext works, otherwise will try jellysms. If anyone else has any other suggestions though please give them!

    I'm going to say email

now most people have a smartphone with some sort of data in their contract (or pay for an addon on PAYG), and since hotmail and gmail support push email, the rip off of paying outragous prices for SMS and MMS messages is becoming increasingly apparent.

(FYI sending a 20,000 word email (~289KB) would cost 9p to anywhere in the world (@ 30p per MB), that is less than a 180 character SMS!!)
