matthwnm wrote:Hi all
Thanks for the great ideas in this thread, will try some out.
My fiancee and I are spending a few days in Edinburgh later in the year. We particularlt like Greek food and our we've found that there is a restaurant called Santorini (and its close to where we will be staying). Has anybody tried this or any other Greek restaurant in Edinburgh? What did you think?
Thanks all
Matthew
Hopefully i haven't missed to your trip up here! I can confirm Santorini is LOVELY!0 -
Thanks Ian.
I did try Santorini and have to agree that it was great food and a nice place; we'll go again when we're next in Edinburgh. I'd recommend it to anyone who enjoys (or wants to try) greek food, relive those holiday Taverna moments

I was back in EDINBURGH and ABERDEEN in the last 14 days and found "THE OLD HAUNTS" I re-visited had gone"OFF" viz
The CLAY OVEN at Churchill AND TANNERS at Juniper Green
The PANDA INN near the KINGS THEATRE would now rate as "fair to good"
The BACK STAGE BISTRO at the side of the KINGS was still running but did not get to it.
We came off the plane late on 5.06.06 and headed into town and spotted
WONGS CHINESE REST. at 221 St Johns road and had a STUPENDOUSLY good chinese dinner. Quite the best we had for years at GBP 29.80 for the two of us incl. a pint of lager and a bottle of water.
The Da Vinci Code made us go to the ROSSLYN CHAPEL --- WELL WORTH a visit --- to think that we drove past it for 15 years. ON THE WAY, by asking the locals, we had an excellent bar lunch at the ROYAL HOTEL, PENICUIK tel 01 968 676 979 at 18.60 for three persons incl drinks
For anybody interested we had a superb 2 day break at the SUMMERHILL HOTEL AND SUITES in ABERDEEN for 127.00 for the 2 of us incl full Scottish Breakfast with fresh eggs cooked in front of you by the chef in full whites incl. hat IN A SUITE with mini kitchen and fridge. Our friends took us to THE SAIGON Vietnamese Rest. at 29a CROWN TERRACE , ABERDEEN for as much as you can eat for 17.00 all brought to the table. They have a 20.00
menu but nobody ever finishes the 17.00 version. All fresh and very good. If this should be in an Aberdeen post please advise. NB the Summerhill is part of the famous new Cain Gp.......... try... http://www.cairnhotelgroup.com/What goes around - comes around

I'm surprised no one has mentioned Henderson's for vegetarian food. Absolutely delicious. My husband is the veg, making me a de facto vegetarian as I do all the cooking, and we both eat there happily. The lentil lasagna is great. It's just off George Street.
Not a veg place, but also delicious is Hong Kong, Hong Kong. The dim sum is great and a must. The only place in town that I've found that does dim sum, and this is with having a few Chinese friends (I've introduced it to them and they love it).0 -
here is a site i found with possibly the largest list of places in edinburgh also is a good site for other things too

Try http://www.finewinediary.com/restaurants/edguide.shtml - one of the most reliable of the online restaurant guides.
Also try 5pm.co.uk for offers and deals.
The problem with 'the List' is that it does not really say anything negative about any of the restaurants - good for an overview and ideas though. I think Joanna Blythman [Herald] is the most reliable of the press restaurant reviewers - not afraid to give her views when something is below par!

For a good budget option near the Pleasance & Underbelly try Nile Valley:
http://www.sundayherald.com/np/Restaurant-review.shtml
In the New Town, Urban Angel (Hanover Street) is very good http://www.sundayherald.com/print45403 and if your budget can stretch to it, so are Dusit Thai and Fishers in the City (seafood), both on Thistle Street. Edinburgh's best restaurant is probably Martin Wishart's in Leith - their lunch is good value for the quality of cooking. http://www.martin-wishart.co.uk/entrance.html
The Edinburgh blog also has restaurant reviews (with pictures!)

Had a lovely meal here last night and couldn't have asked for friendlier service.
Nothing was too much trouble and a special cheesy pasta was quickly rustled up for my daughter who wasn't too keen on the menu. Chef Norman has kids himself and knew straight away what to offer!
The special was fillet steak with brie and it went down really well as did the deep fried crispy brie
Located very near to the Castle, good for lunch or worth trying before the Witchery Tour at 9.30 pm.

Just bumping this post up for visitors who are in the centre of Edinburgh for great food and really friendly service0
