help with a focus and a mysterious clunking noise!

I have been to about 5 garages now and am getting fed up, so i thought i would ask on here...

Every so often i get a big clunking sound coming from the back, underneath, sounds like the car is going to fall apart! there is also a lot of looseness in the steering without much turning of the wheel.

Most of the garages have agreed that the rear suspension bushes are perished but dont seem too bothered by it, apart from one garage who said i needed a new wishbone, and suspension arms etc and also my local ford garage have advised if it is that it will be very expensive (but i havent got them to look at it because they charge £30 for the privelege)

Also could the looseness in the steering be a loose steering rack that needs tightening or just on the way out?

its an 02 plate focus

Any help, really appreciated
thanks

Sounds like the rear subframe bushed are shot.

comon on the Focus and Mondeo. Get them replaced with polyurethene ones.

If you're not handy enough to not have had to take it to a garage to find the clunking, i'd say you really need to get these fitted by a professional.

the lack of stearing could be the bottom stearing column pinion that meats with the stearing rack, or your inner and or outer rack ends are failing.

rear bushes are due to be done on that age focus polybush the subframe (will save you doing it again) and so the rear bushes and top mounts too just to tighten the back end up no need to poly those.

for the front if the wishbones are due and the bushes are perishing i'd do the stabaliser link arms, wishbones, rack ends, and anti roll bar bushes (you could polybush these but not essential and can get them from ebay) that should tighten the front end up.

but for the lack of stearing, its either your stearing column or the rack itself, either way if left could leave you in a brown trouser moment.

no way am i fitting these myself. I just thought id save a few quid buying myself and just paying the garage for the labour

Getting the work done, will be an investment......into keeping the car.
Sounds like it's just worn out, and likely to fail an MOT on something else anyway. Bits don't wear out on their own, everything else is also wearing out, you're just dealing with the first symptoms.

its just that i called ford and they told me if it is the bushes 'they will just warn me now it will be very expensive' kind of made me panic and think ahhhh get rid of the car cant afford it!
