Will someone think of the children! :p

But seriously, where is the OP? Only she can clear up some of the questions we have and assumptions we are making.
Maybe this thread has brought about a deluge of applicants, so she is snowed under.

Most apprenticeships these days are just cover ups so they don't have to pay a proper wage. Most don't have a job at the end of it either. They just take on another apprenticeship and carry on the scam.

Same goes for these New Deal trainee placements. Big companies taking them on for 3 months then just replacing them with another New Deal trainee at the end. Just legalised exploitation.
  • My Hubby is looking to get back into work (he is disabled, not claiming ESA therefore JCP don't want to know, he wants retraining, he is 38 yrs old). He was looking at an adult apprenticeship and was told he could get...£80 a week while training. He would also need his own transport as we have only 1 motability vehicle and it is in my name and he would not be allowed to use it for his own work transport (we are rural). It would cost nearly £80 to get TO the job. So £2.50 ph for an under 19 yr old trainee is relatively raking it in.

I'm unfamiliar with motobility but does he get that as he is disabled?
Only you say it is in your name.

My mother was telling me that where she works, the school leavers are 'working' there for EMA (£30 a week if they're lucky) but they're working full time in awful jobs (like elderly care!!). How are we getting away with doing this to our children :-(

Work placements are an important part of college courses and are never paid. You may think that working in elder care is awful but fortunately there are young people who want to train in this area and need practical experience to do so.

We are both disabled and get HRM, the motability car is in my name he is nominated driver, his HRM pays for his wheelchair. He is not allowed to use the car for his own needs as it is my contract not his. The rules state that the car has to be used for me, on an errand for me (shopping, prescriptions, taking kids to school etc) or for the sole use of me or to benefit me directly. His working/training does not benefit me directly because there is no guarantee that his earnings would go to the household (that is how the world works these days, some people get married but don't expect to share all). I mean he would share all earnings but apparently not many people do these days. It would be "his" earnings not "our" earnings. Daft eh?

To use a car for himself he would have to have his OWN motability car (making us a 2 car family with 1 driver! I can't drive for medical reasons).

This was confirmed by Motability last week and if he did use it for college/work it would be an abuse of the motability scheme, if caught we cold lose the car completely.

An no there is no public transport in our village.

Surely the solution is to take the cash alternative for both of you and pay to run your own car and his wheelchair from that rather than use the schemes in place, you would have to work out if this is a more or less expensive an option. In theory if he ended up getting a job you would be a lot better off, although as a disabled person myself finding a job that suits his needs isn't easy at all!

I know someone that has the car on behalf of their partner as the claimant(does not drive) they(the driver) use it for their own use leaving the partner at home.

Can't you swap, he have the car, he has to be in it to take you places anyway. and use your allowance for the chair

Someone else posted elsewhere on here that their partner was told by motobility that he could use the car for work-as it benefitted the family-other people on that thread said the same as the OP that it was against the rules -so sounds like mobility don't know themselves :(
