Employers will be free to pay above the new wage. Many already do so and this change will not affect that but employers must ensure that they are paying their apprentices at least the minimum wage.

No applicants on £2.50 per hour?
    No suprise there OP
My son worked in a Nursing home doing exactly the same job but not on an apprenticeship ,, £6.50 per hour was the paid rate and latest finish was 8pm
He now has a job in the NHS .. same type of job , but higher rate of pay and really great job prospects.
  • What skills does a school leaver have to make him or her worth more than £2.50 per hour?
I know this was written 4 days ago but I have only just arrived at this thread and felt I had to blow that one out of the water ...

The sentiment is comprised of pure bigotry.

I would bet the skills of my 17 year old who hasn't left school yet against any basket of skills presented by such a bigot.

My son earns a minimum £3.64 per hour and within a month of starting his current job was doing the job of recently "left" predecessors 7 years older paid twice as much, and he was doing it faster and better.

Is he valued? Like &*^% he is. He's exploited. He was even recently rostered to work during school hours such is the lucidity of the grey matter between the ears of employers and managers thesedays who are only interested in paying sub £5.93 per hour wages wherever they can with no commitment to a true employment contract.

Was there an apology? Nope, just a reminder that if he couldn't work the rostered hours that was his hard luck that week.

There are an awful lot of 17 to 19 year olds that have better computer skills and other skills than older people looking for employment
There are also a lot of people in their mid 40's or older that have better skills than those younger looking for work.
Why should a wage be based on age?
It cannot be based on sex and with people now having to work into their 70's according to the news will age discrimination apply to both ends of the job market?
    Just a thought
