Combi Boiler Lighting problem

Hi, I have a problem with my Ariston EuroCombi boiler.
This morning the central heating was on and the other half managed to get a shower in but when it came to my turn the boiler stopped working.
On the control panel the ignition failure light was on.
So I pressed the button and the pilot light came on.
Then two seconds later the light went out again.
I tried a few more times but the pilot light went on and off again.
I left the boiler switched off for half an hour and tried again.
This time the light stayed on for at least 10 minutes and was still on when I left home.
I have an engineer booked to come out but the earliest he can get here is Wednesday!
Any body have any ideas what the problem could be.
Is it something I can do before the engineer get here.
Just a heads up on the issue would be great.
Thanks.
Mark

This is a fairly common problem.
I am no plumber but I believe the normal reason is a faulty thermocouple; a fairly easy job to replace.0 -
Hmmm... Sounds expensive, well aren't all boiler repairs!!
Any idea of cost.
Thanks for the reply0 -
Like most call-outs of tradesmen these days you are talking a £50 min charge.
If it is a thermocouple I would think in the region of £70 would be reasonable.0 -
Cardew Thanks...
Is that £70 for the part or Fitted price.
I assume fitted as I have seen a few Thermocouples for other boilers on t'internet for £10-20.0 -
I agreed thermocouple until I considered

Its been quite a windy day and it might just have blown out a couple of times. If the thermocouple has gone the pilot light will only operate while you press the button to keep the gas valve open.
I guess the price of the job depends on where you are but I'd be disappointed to pay n more than £50 - every engineer worth his salt should have a replacement on the van. [ £5 in P&P on ebay]0
