This is a REAL fare:
Heathrow Express. 16.7 miles. A standard class walk on fare (that is bought on board) is £23. First class is £26. This is a 16.7 mile, 15 minute journey. Kerching!0 -

If the shortest distance between adjacent Underground stations – by rail - is the 260 metres (280 yd) between the Leicester Square and Covent Garden stations on the Piccadilly Line AND the Oyster pay as you go Peak price cap is £8 AND if one mile = 1760 yards, then this ride can cost as much as £50.29 per mile
:eek::eek::eek:Best Regards

Longest rail journey possible is apparently Penzance to Wick which is roughly 830 miles. An Anytime First Class single costs £467, which works out at 56p per mile.
The shortest rail journey I can think of is either Manchester Oxford Road to Manchester Deansgate, or Jordanhill to Hyndland. Both are 0.45 miles, and on both an Anytime First Class Single is only £1.20 so it's only £3 per mile.0 -
derby to peartree station is a funny one it fluctuates between 1.35 a mile to 4.47 a mile - it is 1.7 miles from derby but due to the irregularities of the trains you have to go via stockport on one hence the price increase

Thanks very muchy for all the answers - do keep them coming.
As for the few off topic posts about 'should I have written without checking the fare'. This is a quick request in the forum, the price is in quotation marks, and its to start a discussion off - nothing is published or authoratative at this point. It's a quickie - a little perspective please!Martin Lewis, Money Saving Expert.

That's still an amazing fare. Reading to Basingstoke is 18 miles or 30 mins by car. A taxi would have been cheaper!The man without a signature.0

I've just looked for Newquay-Kyle of Lochalsh which all the papers made a big thing about being the first £1000 plus train ticket, this ticket is now a snip at £640 first class return. I wonder why Cross Country haven't jumped on this and advertised that their fare has gone down £360 (36+%).
Anyway theoretically speaking the most expensive tickets on UK mainline rail are 14 day all line rail rovers (1St & Std) £650 std or £990 1st giving unlimited* travel for 14 days (*certain AM restrictions now apply but can be worked around).0 -
The Sun asked us this question, which we thought interesting - so I thought we'd see who had found the most.
It wants to find the most expensive ticket per mile in the UK - the reason "It came about after the News Ed was charged a staggering £106 quid to go from Reading to Basingstoke, which is about 30 miles – and in Standard class!" So that's £3 ish a mile.
Can you better (or maybe that should be worsen) it?
or maybe check it first? Why post unchecked nonsense and then have a go at those who respond to ask them to "get perspective"0
