He wasn't given a ticket from Reading to Bere Alston which is £106.50 Anytime Single? The 3 letter station code for Bere Alston is BAS. Did he actually check his ticket to see he'd be given the correct ticket? I'd be mighty suspicious if somebody tried to charge me £106 for a trip from Reading to Basingstoke.
Did you really mean to put loose?
Lose: no longer possess, not to retain, unable to find
Loose: not firmly or tightly fixed in place

Hehe, you beat me to it =)

Bit more detail: at £4.00 for a cash fare, with the stations 0.1 miles away from each other, this equals a fare per mile of £40.00

Do I win a prize or anything? =)

but then that is the underground rather than rail, so does that count?

Basingstoke is station code BSK so it is ether a !!!! up or MOD light bulb job that means the travel agent is on the take.

Bedford to Sandy is 8.4 miles as the crow flies and costs £66.30 for a first class single - £7.90 per mile.
  • I can't believe Martin Lewis as a distinguished journalist has picked up the Sun's story. Yes train fares are of course a valid point but the fact that the Sun claimed to have paid £106 return is rubbish. The standard walk up fare is £6.70 single - £7.40 return in standard and £25.00 Anytime day return ticket. Maybe this journo from the Sun didn't have a ticket when he boarded and paid on the train. The only other way is to go via Clapham Junction it's about £53.00 single (double for a return maybe). If the jouno wen that way - he's an idiot! Would have been cheaper to get a cab. It's poor example to use in this important issue and the fact Martin Lewis dissed a user of the forum for his own thoughts is also poor.

If the shortest distance between adjacent Underground stations – by rail - is the 260 metres (280 yd) between the Leicester Square and Covent Garden stations on the Piccadilly Line AND the Oyster pay as you go Peak price cap is £8 AND if one mile = 1760 yards, then this ride can cost as much as £50.29 per mile

But the oyster single fair is £1.90 or if you pay in cash it's £4.00

Rail fairs are well within Martins remit. Most Journalists pick up on each others stories or the "wire services". It is the job of the Editors to separate out the dross and apply the papers political spin.

and I think that's the point people are making - the fact that the claim could very easily have been be verified as being untrue by a quick check on line before repeating it on this site.

no thats not how it works - you have to base it on mileage the train runs not a straight line.. If that was the case then there would be very expensive tickets from kent to essex
