It's not necessarily a question of mismanaging one's affairs, though. I was with TalkTalk and they rang me up shortly before my renewal date. At no point did they tell me it was a conversation about renewal, they were asking me about something else. When I came to move, they told me I had agreed to renew the contract during that phone conversation. They refused to listen to the recording of it and I will never ever have a contract with them again (there are other reasons including their actions when I moved house, but this was part of it). If they practice sharp practices then they deserve all they get.

Sorry , I disagree; its not difficult to note the renewal date on a diary or calendar. If you want out, then 30 days prior, tell them!
:)Are you saying you didn't know you were on an auto renewing contract? If so, thats the "sharp practice".

Not sure why anybody would use a company like BT that does this kind of thing, my provider uses a 30 day contract only.

Far better value than BT as well, far better company.

Best thing I ever did ... leaving the dreaded BT.

So many people on here have been caught by this sharp practice that I am convinced that they are dishonestly signing people up to auto renewing contracts that they did not agree to. I doubt you will lose whatever deal you hold so precious.

But I would rather you did lose your deal than BT be allowed to profit from the deceit over their auto renewing contracts.

The fact BT need to do this to keep customers is the most appalling thing. Virgin make special offers to new customers that existing customers can only get if they threaten to leave & then sign up for a new 12 month contract. Other than that the service stays exactly the same after 12 months at the same price (bar price rises & changes to VAT) and no requirement to stay.

If your happy to pay BT for your evening and weekend calls your not tied to a rolling contract, just like Virgin.;)

"Unlimited Evening & Weekend Plan – standard plan

The Unlimited Evening & Weekend Plan is available to eligible residential customers with no minimum period. Please note, a minimum period of 12 months applies to line rental for new customers, existing customers taking additional lines, home movers and those switching their phone line from another provider, signing up to this calling plan.
The price is £3.00 per month plus line rental, which has a monthly cost of £13.60 if you pay by Direct Debit or monthly payment plan.
Otherwise, add £1.80 per month for payment processing fee levied by BT Payment Services Limited, a BT Group company. Customers benefiting from the previous paper-free billing discount will continue to receive a discount of £1.25 a month on their line rental charge.

Sorry can't agree with you :) Don't see why I should be penalised when others don't read the small print!

Thing is you don't lose whichever services you sign up for at the beginning, at the end of the 12 months which it appears you do with BT.

Never ever personally had a BT line :D

Sorry, I can't agree with you. I called three times to tell them I didn't want my contract auto-renewed, and also wrote in. But they still auto-renewed me. And I knew every word of the small-print, and kept time and date written logs of every time I made contact, therefore you can't say I'm making this up.

They are therefore clearly signing people up illegally. It is very very much a "sharp practice".
You're spelling is effecting me so much. Im trying not to be phased by it but your all making me loose my mind on mass!! My head is loosing it's hair. I'm going to take myself off the electoral role like I should of done ages ago and move to the Caribean. I already brought my plane ticket, all be it a refundable 1.

The reason that others don't read the small print is because BT are putting them on a contract without telling them - so they are unaware that there is any small pint which has to be read. If it was a case of people knowingly signing up, I would agree with you.
