  • This drives me mad too. My dd is in year 6 and she is one of the tallest in year, already all filled out so at size 12 and shoe size 7 theres no way she is squeezing into the usual disney princess dresses.

Anyway, every June her school has book day. I didnt want to buy fancy dress for 1 day and I am SO not creative so for the past couple of years shes gone in 'normal' clothes as a muggle. :o:o

Red Riding Hood? And you've then got a picnic basket, chair-throw and a Hallowe'en costume too! All for the price of one.

aarrggghhh! was moaning about this too this week! two consecutive school Fridays we had to dress up, and I can only assume Red Nose Day will be another day....as a single parent with two children in the same school (and as of 2012, three), there is a cost implication involved and it really is a burden. And I'm not one for just sending them in uniform. It singles them out as different. There's no answer to it, other than to ask I guess that they do it no more than once a term, perhaps?

Weve had two dress up days already since they started reception in September.
First was children in need, they had to wear something spotty. I put them both in top, skirt and just put spotty tights on.
We just had world book day, I just put a witches costume over normal clothes that they wore on halloween. I knew they would take it off anyway.

We have dress up as `something red` day on red nose day. ......

This made me mad too. I really sympathize. Costuming day before the internet got so big was terrifying.
Thank goodness they are in secondary school now.

I had 4 in prmary school last year.. down to a mere 3 now ...

In this academic year so far we have had spotty day and book character day and halloween day so far christmas parties were 'princess/prince charming' parties which the year 6 boys loved.. as you can imagine.. we have red for comic relief and blue day for anti bullying.. and no doubt a few more thrown in for good measure. There are then te individual class days, egyptians, victorians etc.

Dorothy only had red sparkly shoes at the end of the film, they were normal most of the way through, blue school gingham dress and little basket with a toy dog in it with hair tied at the base of her neck in bunchs and you're sorted.

World book day - jeans and tshirt and famous five book, or pyjamas and dressing gown = sleepover club

For the red glitter shoes, pick up a cheap pair of flats in Primark/Tesco/cheapy shoe shop and some red glitter from your local craft shop/Early Learning Center. Paint shoes with some red inexpensive paint first if you like, but basically you just have to cover the shoes in PVA glue and sprinkle the glitter on! About 2 coats would look best but if you don't have time don't worry. :D Try getting red flats in that case and one coat of glitter should do! :)
Ditto what everyone else is saying about the gingham school dress, even pop a white short sleeve top underneath it to make it look even more like Dorothy! :)

  • Hopefully you've had some inspiration from all the lovely previous posters - but for future dress up day I'd recommend getting down to car-boots and spring fetes if you can - 'tis soon the season, and we always manage to pick up stuff for our girls' dressing up box for under £1! Oh, and ALWAYS be on the lookout for stripy tops in charity shops/sales for a backup pirate outfit :)
