I spoke to a landfill expert who's also an experienced gardner and he told me that most compost that you buy actually comes from landfills - and that bugs, especially fungus gnats, are very common. He always microwaves his compost on high until it's hot to the touch, then lets it cool down before sowing seeds in it. It sounds a bit extreme but better safe than sorry, I suppose.

We've bought a few different brands of compost from various places this month, and most of it has been bobbins.

Two different ones from Homebase were full of woody/root-like bits. Some we got from a local hardware store were similar.

Only half-decent bags we got were from a local Range store, though I'm never keen on buying from there as the bags are always filthy or split.
