For reference I'm about to pay £139 to have my failed aircon system converted from R12 to R134a and regassed. That price includes the conversion kit and a new dryer. It also includes the "Skyline tax". For normal cars the price is usually £125. This is for a mobile guy who will do the work in my office car park too!

£125 for a tyre for a corsa!!! look on blackcircles or somewhere before I buying to get a price comparison, I only pay £90 for mine and thats a large 4x4!

What are you putting on it? I'm looking for some decent ATs, but at 18 inch rims, the choice doesn't seem to be great.

    That's a red herring IMO.

The alternative to a car is public transport - and bus / train tickets depreciate a hell of a lot faster than a car does.

Private cars, in the main, also offer a huge time saving. How much do you value your "free" time?

Its not a red herring - its a FACT.

You buy a car for £x, when you sell it you get £y. x - y = depreciation.

Not only that but you can seriously reduce it by buying the right car at the right age, and selling it at the right time (which may be many years later)

How many times have you seen on this thread 'i want to buy a new diesel car so that i can get an extra 8mpg'.

Depreciation will totally offset that saving...

I am using hankooks or Kumho's, used to be a tyre snob, but these came on the car, and have never had any issues, there was one pirelli, which wore out after about 18,000miles, but I changed the kumho's at 34,000 (still with about 10,000 miles left) as I found a set of new Hankooks, with OE alloys on thiefbay for £300! I now have a spare set of alloys, which I will probably put some winters on later in the summer when prices drop.

Thisismoney.co.uk have lots of on-line calculators - I used "the true cost of running a car" and worked out that I get 30mpg but the true cost of running my car is 45mpg, they calculate everything based on your insurance, MOT, depreciation, breakdown, miles driven per year etc etc
