I have found with mine that she is much better if (a) she has a ball in her mouth when other dogs are around and (b) with my OH as he is much calmer than me. I do get a bit tense around other dogs, though I try not to.We don't stop playing because we grow old; We grow old because we stop playing.0

I understand completely trudiha. Not only embarrassing but isolating.
I used to look forward to walking my previous dogs with others in lovely woods etc.
Now it's me and him only, walking down muddy country roads.
To be honest, if it wasn't for my family, I would put him to sleep.
It's not just the walking, but I'm terrified of him escaping. He would attack any animal other than human, and this is horse country!
He is so confusing to me. I can remove a treat from him, no problem. Burglars would be greeted with a toy. It's the animal aggression, and I have years left yet.
Im sorry as I know how much they get under your skin and how much you do love them. Believe me I do know. I have a cocker thats taken on a mastiff and won. Will lick a human to pieces but will do his best to kill another dog
Im still of the opinion that you need to learn how to control the dog.To be able to read whats happening and be there to stop any possible problem before it becomes one. If you cant control the dog or work around having a dog thats dog aggressive then sometimes letting the dog go to a place where he isnt a threat, or put to sleep is the better option
Coming online asking for help from strangers isn't the way about things. You all know your dogs and knows what works for you, giving a stranger and a strange dog advice is asking for trouble0 -
OP, an individual behaviourist is extremely expensive, however it might be worth muzzling him and taking him to obedience training class. You will not only get advice from the trainer but he will have the opportunity to socialise despite himself. It is certainly worth a try, you have nothing to lose and the lessons will only run you about £8 for two hours.0

thanks for the replies, i was a bite scared to put this out not sure how you would all reply but i am glad i have people who understand.
took him out for two walks yesterday and with intense training he responded really well yesterday ( i took my mother with me who has trained stubborn dogs.) by the end of the walk he was walking next to us and coming when called ( he was on a extendable but only slightly extended) and not speeding off, he walked past 10 or so hoodys and didn't bark or anything, but didn't come across any dogs so still can't comment on that again.0 -

A dog trainer that would put a dog into a situation that it was uncomfortable with is not really the one to take advice from. The last thing a dog with issues with other dogs needs is to be in a general class.
Not only that but if I was attending a class with my dog then I would be very unhappy if a dog aggressive dog was also attending.
I currently have half a dozen clients with reactive/dog aggressive dogs that have learnt the behaviour at someone else's classes.
Oh and the right help doesn't have to cost a fortune by the way.A dog with a behaviour problem needs help not punishment.0 -

What is the point of putting a dog that has dog aggression in a class full of dogs?????
This is why these threads need to be reported to admin - dangerous advice is given out all too freely0 -

Most people who ask for advice, already have a feeling what they should or shouldn't do but want to share their problem. This is turn leads to responses from people offering their opinion,no different to chatting in a park or with friends.
Of course just like 'real life' there is good and bad advice ..Obstacles are things a person sees when he takes his eyes off his goal.0 -
I agree but this forum is named Pets and Pet care. I think the line is a bit blurred sometimes on what is sensible or appropiate to ask advice on.

We HOPE they have an idea - we cant know as we are not mind readers
We also dont know who else is reading the forums and thinking that the advice is given is sound implement said advice0 -
Hi, another patterdale owner here, mine is lovely and has no problem with meeting other dogs on walks but I have read that they can be very protective of the family and like being the only dog. You haven't had him very long he is probably still feeling very unsure of himself. Do keep us posted on how he settles in. Good luck!Slightly bitter0

our local obediance/dog trainin club does 'groundwork' classes for dogs that can be dog aggressive or have other socialisation issues.
1-2 'groundwork' dogs at a time per lesson, with a selection of stooge dogs to help them learn to be friendlier.
perhaps ring around to see if your local clubs offer something similar?0
