Erm , by banging it against something? Rubbing it against a solid surface when sitting on a wall or some such other. There are plenty of ways that it couldve worn through.

OP what is the purity of the gold 9ct or 18ct?
Gold as a metal is soft and therefore is more susceptible to being damaged, compared to Platinum or Titanium for example. Having worked as a jeweller before, it sounds like the setting may have been disturbed, so you can't rule out accidental damage. Until it has been independently assessed though, you are not going to get a refund or exchange out of them.Best Regards
