b&q have actually got these on bogof because british gas have given HUGE amounts of money to them to help consumers bring down the cost of heating and suchlike.
It is only on the thicker stuff too - so go and get your money's worth! we have just fully insulated my new garden office!£2 Savers club started 30/09/06.... £I raided it
Random coin jar = £35.51

B&Q currently have rolls of Knauf insulation 170mm on BOGOF - £28.99 each covering just over 8m-squared each. Could only get 4 in the car!
They also have space blankets on BOGOF which come in convienient foil bags to go between/over joists
My loft has only 10cm of insulation so this will do the job of topping it up to recommended 270mm v cheaply

Does anyone know if this is a regular offer throughout the year or when this offer finishes?

just thinking about replacing our loft insulation, whats the best way to install insulation or minimum thickness? can you lay a second layer perpendicular to the first layer but it goes over joists? or is that not advised?ummm...0
-
The advised depth is (or certainly was when I checked recently) 270mm. Hence the funny depths available, as most people would have had 100mm in the past, so you can buy 170mm to top it up to the correct depth.
Laying it transverse across the beams is actually advised as this gives better insulation. Just be careful when covering wires, make sure you mark somehow where the joists are in case you need to go up in the future, make sure that you don't insulate beneath a cold water tank, and make sure that your pipes are well insulated (they might be more prone to freezing now you've reduced heat loss into the loft). Oh, and make sure that you do the loft door as well...0 -

If you are on certain benefits you can get both loft insulation and cavity wall insulation fitted free. It's also worth checking your local council's website. You should be able to get a grant of up to 50% off the costs if you do not have benefits.

Its also possible to have the boiler replaced on the grant.
You get a limit towards any work done, my sister in law had a new boiler, and cavity wall insulation done, and only paid a few hundred pounds for the lot.
any level of disabilty for any person living in the house is enough to qualify. My son is on the lowest level of disability and that qualified us for all out loft and cavity walls done.Had it not been for this site, i would probably not have even known about that.0 -
Can I have more info on what type of insulation to buy please. Would it be better to buy the 'space blanket' so if you need to go up in the loft you can roll the 'blanket' back up and see where the joists are ?0
-
Space blanket works out very expensive . Look at the coverage on the packs.
The big rolls are often a quarter of the price ( in amount of coverage per £ ). These snap into between-joist width rolls if necessary ( the rolls are pre-cut to snap whilst still rolled up).
Just buy a pack or two of loft boards ( about £5 for a pack of 4 in DIY stores) to put in near the loft hatch so you have somewhere safe to stand when you first go in your loft. You should then be able to work out where your joists are if you ever need to be up there.0 -
We have just broke down a fited cupboard so lots of wood spare, would it be possible to use this in the loft on top of the insulation? Just wondering if this would be safe enough and save me buying some loft boards?
Thanks:j BABY A :j0
