E-on - switched electric in Sept but just got final bill today!
E-on , I switched electric from them to British Gas in september last year but only just got a final bill today? - £44 which was from 4th aug - 15th sep.
is there a time limit on when E-on should have sent the final bill out after switching suppliers, if so can I refuse to pay it?

Of course you can refuse to pay it.
What that will do to your credit rating I will leave that up to you.0 -
Check to make sure the final reading matches the opening reading used by BG, if it does then you're going to have to pay it. If they'd taken over 12 months then you may have had a case.0

I'm not really concerned about my credit rating, I'm just concerned why E-on have waited till now to send the final bill?
But if I still owe E-on some money then surely I couldn't switch until I paid E-on the final bill then why did switching suppliers continue?
I'm e-mailed British Gas to ask for the opening reading and the date when I transferred to them.__________________0 -

Six years. Five in Scotland.
You ought to have received an initial bill from British Gas by now. As such you have known how much you owe E-on so would have been waiting for this bill. (Indeed you must have estimated this yourself when you decided to switch.)
It is entirely normal for the final bill to arrive after the switch takes place (no, five months is not normal or acceptable but that does not affect your liability.) It is not easy for it to arrive before - the two suppliers have to agree end/start readings.0 -
One year, else the supplier will probably fall foul of the 12 month back billing rule.

Hi Josie64,
I am sorry that it has taken this long to receive your final bill.
The change of supply process involves a lot of information being sent from one supplier to the other, with a number of third party companies verifying the info, such as meter readings, serial numbers etc.
It sounds like E.ON have been waiting for your new supplier to send the final meter readings to close the account to, (this is done electronically)this is the most common reason for a final bill being delayed.
Have you asked E.ON what caused the delay? if so what did they say?
Also ,do as stewie_griffin says and make sure the final reading on the E.ON bill matches the start reading on the BG bill.
Hope this helps explain things a little better.

If that were the case, no-one would ever be able to switch. A final reading is taken on or around the advised day of the switch, and the final bill is produced on the basis of that reading. So by the time your final bill arrives, you will already be on supply with the new provider.
Do you not have a record of the date and reading at the time of the switch, since you would have supplied this to BG?
Your opening reading with BG should match the closing reading with Eon, if the two do not agree then the switch will be delayed. No free lunch, and no free laptop

thanks Helena,
I have had an e-mail back from british Gas today and the transfer date was 30th september and the start meter reading was 00315 and British Gas say that was agreed with E-on but this does not match what is on the final bill?
The reading dated 29th sep on the final bill from E-on is 00287?
As there is a descrepancy what do you suggest to do now?
Would it be possible to pay the final E-on bill off at so much a week, because we have budget to pay British Gas for our electric, other wise then we will get into arrears with British Gas and i don't think that is fair just because E-on take five months to send the final bill out.__________________0 -

Hi Josie64,
What was the actual reading you provided to BG to start your account from?
It does sound like this is the reason for the delay.
E.ON may let you have a payment arrangement to clear the balance, due to the length of time it has taken to produce the bill, but this does depend on the reasons for this.
A final bill when a customer has changed supplier would normally need to be paid once this had been received.
I think it would be best to contact E.ON to establish what has gone wrong here.

I've had a reminder bill, so I phoned E-on up and queried why it had taken so long to send a final bill out and they said they had been waiting for a final reading from British Gas. they asked how soon I could pay the bill, I said I wasn't sure as I now have to pay British Gas and if I pay what is owed in full to E-on then I will get in arrears with British Gas which I don't think is fair as it's not my fault that the final bill has taken five months to be sent out, so I said I would pay the final bill over the next five months, starting at the end of April, so E-on agreed and are going to send out payment slips.__________________0
