  • it says that this is recorded as a credit search, that isn't good is it?? :o
  • Hi I was reading the credit rating discusssion area, and below is Martin Lewis' advice about searches relating to individual's checking their own credit report:

No you're not getting further searches (well you are, but they don't count so don't worry, i did put it in the article - cos i knew people'd ask )

I received the following letter from Nationwide today:

    Dear Mr *****

THIS IS IMPORTANT - PLEASE READ CAREFULLY

I recognise that you've asked us not to send you any promotional mailings, but this is a particularly important matter. Earlier this year a laptop computer belonging to the Society was stolen from an employee's home in a domestic burglary. The laptop contained some customer information to be used mainly for marketing purposes.

The information did not include any PIN's, passwords, account balance information or memorable data and I can reassure you that there has been no loss of money from our customers' accounts as a result of this incident.

Since the loss of the laptop we have taken steps to improve our security measures further and provide additional protecion to our members. However as financial security is such an important issue we are writing to all our customers with some simple steps that you should take to protect yourself against becoming a victim of financial crime, particularly identity theft:
    • Keep your PINs and passwords secure - never write them down or reveal them to anyone.
    • Avoid using obvious passwords like your date of birth or home phone number.
    • Always check your statements thoroughly.
    • Destroy bills, receipts and other financial papers, preferably by using a shredder.
    • If you move house, have your mail redirected and give your new address to your bank or building society.
You can find more tips on how to protect yourself from fraud in the two leaflets enclosed with this letter. Please take a few minutes to read them both.

Not only am I sorry for any concern this incident may have caused but may I also confirm that all Nationwide customers are covered by the Society's customer promise that "If you are the innocent victim of fraud, you will not lose out."

    Yours sincerely

    Philip Williamson
    Chief Executive.

The two leaflets that are included with the letter are a Nationwide one called Fraud Awareness - Be Safe, Top tips to protect your identity and the other leaflet is a Home Office one called Identity Theft - Don't be a victim.

Your name and account number is printed on every cheque you send.
Do Nationwide put out an alert every time you send a cheque?
.......or is this just another piece of sensational journalism?

Plus if you're buying something mail order you'll be sending your address out along with the cheque - so they'll have your name, address, account number, sort code and specimen of your signature.

That is probably more dangerous than what may or may not be on an employees laptop.
