should I voice my concerns

both my dd's attend nursery part time whilst I am at college.
my niece attends the same nursery. I saw my sil who said whilst she was dropping her dd at nursery she saw a nursery nurse spraying air freshner as an activity and encouraging the children to try and catch the spray.
The nn is not a young girl but a woman in her late 30's. My sil reported this to management but felt she wasn't taken seriously. There response was we will bring it up in the staff meeting.
I would not be happy with my dd's being encouraged to play with air freshner
not only for health reason but because they may think it is acceptable to mess around with chemicals. Should I bring it up with the owner or do you think I am overreacting?

    what on earth !! NO ! i dont think you are overreacting at all ! and YES you should bring it up with the manager !

    Maybe we should stop wrapping our kids up in cotton wool in case they shove it up their noses and it gets stuck?

    perhaps not, but certainly undesirable for kids, or anyone for that matter, to be subjected to breathing in clouds of chemical vapour
    although I'm sure they're technically legally 'safe' for domestic use, I'm certain that 'normal use' wouldn't include the kind of over-exposure involved in the game described above

    I am all for children being encouraged to have their comfort zones pushed but it is not an appropiate activity for a children aged 2 to be breathing in air freshner and I would never have thought of getting young children to catch spray from it

    I think, as your sil has already mentioned it to the manager and it will be discussed at the staff meeting, all that should be done, has been done :)

    If you have *any* concerns about how your children are being treated whether it's about air freshner, the state of the toilets or whatever, yes of course you should discuss it with the Manager. Personally, I wouldn't be fretting over it, but I can say that with years of experience - had it been my first child ... I might have reacted with more concern :D

    I do have to say though, what are your expectations from wanting to report it again but to the owner? I know you say your SIL *felt* she wasn't taken seriously, but is it possible that she simply didn't get the reaction she expected, or worse, didn't actually consider what reaction she *did* want, but simply felt deflated by the one she got? Until the manager has spoken to the member of staff concerned, she can't be 100% certain what was in the can and what the activity involved and she has to be fair to both your SIL's allegation and give the member of staff a chance to explain their side.

    In reality, the most likely outcome is, that it is discussed and deemed an inappropriate activity and won't happen again.

    If it *should* happen again, then perhaps that would be the time to speak to the Owner and explain this incident too. :)

    It wasnt to report it, it was more to be reassured that it wouldn't happen again but I will take your comments on board thanks

    Oh, ok :D

    Well, I'm sure the Owner will either attend any meetings, or at the very least, be given copies of the minutes. :)

    On the reassurance side, one tip ... rather than 'voicing' concerns to a Manager/member of staff, put it in writing. That way, you'll get a written response ;) If they don't follow up with a written response, chase them up with a second letter (even include a copy of the first). HTH :)
