Help - Need cash but don't want to resort to payday loans

After making some stupid miscalculations, overspending and unforeseeable expenses I have left myself in a bit of a bind. I need to make around £200 (but anything is better than nothing) by 14th to pay my rent. I really don’t want to take out a payday loan as I have gone that route before and it isn’t pretty! I am on a DMP so can’t get “normal” credit.

I have put what I can on eBay and I am looking to see if there is anything else I can put on tonight. I have a JD Williams credit account and if I am totally desperate I can get things on that to sell at a loss and pay for later but I really don’t want to go down that route for reasons I am sure you can imagine!

I have got a load of food in and paid my council tax (DMP payment and gas bill will have to wait). My work is 15 miles from my house which I can cycle 2- 3 times a week to save money, weather permitting.

Does anyone have any ideas of ways to raise cash without borrowing? Or things that sell on eBay I can get hold of cheaply and easily?

Would be great if I can make it through the month without resorting to high interest loans.

  • If you live in London, there's quite a few focus groups happening...£30-£50 for a couple of hours work.

Of course, if you don't live in London, it's not much good....
  • I do live in London but I work in Chiswick which is really far out to the West so can't get to central London and back in my lunch hour. I would be very grateful if you can send me details of how to get into these though.

Not sure how you feel about babysitting? There is a good free website where you can register. findababysitter.co.uk. You may not pick up work in time but on the other hand if you are registered and get some jobs in the future it could help out if you ever find yourself in a tricky situation again. I have registered and done a few jobs. Where I am I charge £6.50. Larger cities you can probably charge £8/hour. It's also easy money if the children are young and in bed. Good luck! I know what it is like to have little money.
  • Babysitting would be fine but I'd be very surprised if many people were happy to leave thier kids with a stranger they met online! Do people really use this? I will sign up though, and thank you!

  • A quick update, so far I have returned a bra that still had the tags on so that's £15 in my hand. A dress I have on eBay (one my favourites sniff) has 4 watchers so hopefully there will be bit of a bidding war. That website has sent me a few groups but so far they either don't want people like me or are in the middle of the day so I am at work. The baby sitting thing looks good but the site is asking me to pay £15 for a background check which I can't afford at the moment and I doubt anyone on there would leave their child with an stranger who hasn't been checked!

Any more ideas? I really want to avoid getting back into the payday loan cycle!

It depends what you're willing and able to do. I've emailed you privately about the best route.

Otherwise focus groups are a great idea. Can't recommend them enough!! I've done a few over here in Birmingham and always got £50+ for a couple of hours sitting around chatting about one type of product or another. It's worth spending a few quid to get there as you'll make more back, and they usually pay cash in hand :D

Look on your local freecycle and recycling groups for stuff you can pick up for free, then sell it on at a profit.

    Check out police auctions too.

Scour people per hour for freelance temp jobs you can pick up immediately, and look on gumtree for promotions jobs (Look for NEC/ exhibition work).
The only thing we know for sure, is that we know nothing

Yes I would go down the auction route. Sell items you do not need on ebay or maybe if you are skilled at graphics/writing you can become a freelancer and provide content or graphics for websites.
  • Police auctions tend to be during the day when I am at work unfortunately but I will go along to any that I can get to. I had a look at frecycle - it is mainly huge peices of furniture I would need to hire a van to shift at the mo but I will keep checking back.

I am incredibly grateful for your suggestions guys! Every penny I make is less interest going out to a payday loan lender!
