where is the best/cheapest place to get lunchboxes to fit in the freezer? Or do you think freezer bags will be ok? Thanks for your help

I make and freeze meals for my OH to take to work, and I tend to get the plastic 'takeaway' tubs from the 99p shop - I used to use expensive lock and lock type boxes, but OH 'lost' so many I gave up. I think they come in a pack of ten and they're great for stacking in the freezer. If you're careful, you can get two or three uses before they get too brittle.

You could line a plastic tub with a freezer bag, pour the contents in and freeze. Once it's frozen take the bag out and you have a nice even sized block to put back in the freezer. You can fit loads more in this way and you won't need so many tubs.

I tried that with the freezer bags or cling film but I found the cling film got stuck in the food and the freezer bags were hard to tell what was in them and it had to go back in a tub to go to work.

You can get a pack of 8 'Tubz' in Tesco near the tin foil and freezer bags which are £2.04 for 8, probably the same ones in the £1 shop but they're reasonable quality and dishwasher and microwave safe. I freeze things in glass clip lock tubs if they're going to go in the oven.

I use margarine tubs to freeze my stuff in. the 1kg ones are just the right size for my family.

Sometime I decant them into freezer bags, which i label with masking tape and a permanent marker.

    works great for me.

They also sell larger packs of them in Lakeland - I bought a pack of about 60 maybe and they're still on the go. Sometimes a lid breaks, or the dish, but I've still got about half of them unused after a couple of years! I don't do as much batch cooking as I would like though.

Tesco also have little square 'value' tubs that are quite a good size. I used those for soup (portion for 2, I make it thick and end up adding water). If you get lots the same they tend to stack up better in the freezer. The takeaway style ones are particularly good for stacking.

I use these, they're great and stack together really well. I also like the fact that they're reusable for a very long time so cuts down on rubbish like plastic bags being thrown away.

Wilkinsons do the silver foil (like takeaways use) tubs with lids 10 for £1 but I prefer margarine tubs as I can re-use them and they stack easily.

  • I use a combination of takeaway tubs, which we keep from the odd chinese we have (a rare but enjoyable treat) and icecream tubs, marg tubs and any plastic containers i have hanging around from ready meals or packaging from meat, i.e. washing up thoroughly and ready to go again.

Edit to say, we do eat healthy and ready meals are in the minority but the tubs are handy afterwards so that helps factoring in the cost.
