It seems HDMI to VGA is possible as Maplin are selling a similar cable albeit for £15.99.
It is possible (even likely) that the cable was faulty and caused the damage. The seller to be honest has been reasonable in the description and offers to replace faulty product but as with all retailers, claim they cannot be held responsible for damage arising from installation or faulty products. To claim damages you would need to proceed via small claims court with all the evidence and let a court decide. I think you have been very unlucky and the lesson is be very careful of very cheap products from china where QC is very patchy.

i have just sent my 1st email explaining what happed what the problem is and what i think should be done

hello i bought a hdmi to VGA lead from you the other day it arrived yesterday morning
i plugged the hdmi into my xbox elite console and the vga into my monitor
turned both on and nothing happed so removed the lead
and plugged my normal hdmi lead back in and into my TV
now my xbox will not send a hdmi signal
i have tryd 2 other hdmi leads from xbox to tv and same happens
no display i have since taken my xbox to a repair shop
and they cannot fix my xbox and tell me plugging hdmi into VGA
is what has done it as hdmi is digital signal and VGA is analog signal
it dose however in your advert on ebay where i purchased the cable say that this is the purpose of the cable
i would like to no why you would sell such a cable that will destroy anything it is connected to
and i would like to no what will be done about my xbox elite
i propose £60 compensation this is under the listed price of a 2nd hand xbox elite i will add the rest but feel this would be fair
    please reply

will just have to see how it goes i guess

Sorry, but your talking rubbish. They are a top-rated eBay seller with 99.6% feedback. You cannot judge a seller by the quantity of negatives without taking the quantity of positives in to account. That sellers shifts thousands of items a month (5607 in the last month), so 28 negs and a few more neutrals isn't bad going.
...and I think you're talking rubbish. Irrespective of sales volume, the bottom line is what quantity of negs that you, as a seller, are willing to deem acceptable. For me that wouldn't be an acceptable level and unless it's down to buyers who just neg 'because they can' (which doesn't appear to be the case in this instance), then I'd be working hard to reduce that number. You'd be happy with that level of negs? Fine, whatever. Horses for courses.

You do realise that high volume sellers will pick up negs along the way - it's unavoidable, as you can't please everyone, and some people will neg you for things that aren't your fault, like shipping delays, or blame you for things that are their fault, like failing to read the item description properly. What matters is the ratio of happy people to unhappy people.

If you just judge by the number of negatives and nothing else, you'll get a biased view against high volume sellers which is exactly what you did. This sellers ratio is good which is why eBay have rewarded him with Top Rated Seller status.

I know a seller that got 138 negatives in the last 30 days. According to you that would be a horrifically awful seller, as you believed 28 negatives in 30 days was "dismal", but this seller happens to sell over 25,000 items a month. You see how volume is relevant?

Probably not still? ;) Well lets just forget it then. :)

Ps) Agree with the poster who said that the actual feedback comments are important - but as with all high volume sellers, you'll always see "SCAMMER!! LIAR!!! BEWARE!!!111" type comments. Some people try and do as much damage as possible once they've decided to leave a neg and all high volume sellers have to deal with this. :)
