Ebay cable broke my xbox

Hi I bought a hdmi to vga cable from ebay to use my xbox on my monitor
plugged it into my xbox as this is what it says it is for and it has damaged my xbox so it can not be used any more after talking to a repair shop I have been told the cable I bought isn't even possible to be used on anything as it will damage anything it is used on
in the listing it dose say any damage to anything they will not be held responsible
what can I do I haven't emailed them yet as I wanted go no what i can do
after more research I found the cable they are selling there's as a version of and it is £60 not £5 like there's
I should have done more research before hand but I'm sure this dose not give them the right to sell things intended to damage things

it has blown my hdmi port so no signal is sent from it anymore even if i plug it in the normal way to a tv the shop says it is because hdmi is a digital signal and vga is analog so has shorted the hdmi port

How can a cable which has no independent power source blow a port? I find this extremely unlikely nay impossible.
One important thing to remember is that when you get to the end of this sentence, you'll realise it's just my sig.

i found this on the Internet after it had happened

was just on ebay looking for some cheap alternatives to buy HDMI cables… found some, quality was questionable… then I stumbled upon some people selling “HDMI to VGA/RCA” cables.
I was surprised for a moment. How’s that possible??
I should state that, it sure is possible to fabricate such a cable. It’s easy to just take any wire and put any sort of connectors at both ends. But watch out!! They are likely not to work.
The engineer in me knows that HDMI and VGA/RCA connections carry completely different type of signals. HDMI is pure digital and VGA/RCA are pure analog. There’s no way you can just take a cable, hook up the components and they will work.
For a start, if your equipment doesn’t get fried, you should already be lucky!
In reality, what you really need is a converter box. A dedicated piece of equipment that converts HDMI signals to RCA or VGA.
So, be warned, don’t get suckered by simple cables that appear to do the trick. No such thing!!

How can a cable which has no independent power source blow a port? I find this extremely unlikely nay impossible.

The power comes from the port itself. If the attached cable/device makes a connection between the +ve and -ve pins, then the short circuit could cause a component to blow.

Looks like there are a few unhappy customers who bought a similar cable via Amazon. Maybe you could try to get a quote for a repair and claim damages from the seller...?
