IF my Son reaches the 10MB Limit on BTBroadband, will he be warned or charged extra for the month?

    I presume you mean 10Gb?

But no your connection will just slow down to dial up after you have used up your allowance.

If you exceed your monthly usage allowance your service won't stop working; advisory emails will be sent to your BT primary email address if you reach 80 per cent of your usage allowance each month and further notification if you then exceed your allowance in a particular month.
If you exceed your usage allowance, you'll be charged for additional usage in units of 5 gigabytes (GB), at £5 per 5GB. Charges will apply from the second month you exceed your allowance and will be shown on your BT bill.
To help you keep track of your usage we provide a usage monitor which shows on a daily basis, how much of your allowance you have used and how much is remaining. You can access the usage monitor through your online account by clicking the ‘View my broadband usage’ link in the broadband services section. If you haven’t set-up an online account then you can register at www.bt.com/mybt

Why would you go with BT (or anyone) on a limited broadband package?

Cost, as my Son has a medical problem at the moment and for the first time in his life he is unable to work.Because of the hilly area he needs Sky for TV and cannot have Broadband from them them unless he pays 17 pounds. Does that answer your question?

Certainly Sky Connect should be avoided, although you do get a 40Gb allowance.
It would be worth looking at other ISPs, if there are any LLU operators at his exchange look at them first.
I've seen reports elsewhere on the forum that BT are not averse to a discounting on their broadband.

    Check on Samknows exchange search.

Unfortunately my Son's Girlfriend who did not have a Computer at her home used pay as you go when staying at the weekends. As this was very slow she asked if he would have BT on his bill at 14 pounds per month with 3 months paid in advance and she would pay all the payments. The contract is for 18months. Shortly after, they broke up so he had to pay the 42 pounds. He rang BT to explain but they said he now has to stay with the Contract for 18 months.
When he became ill he cancelled his Broadband with Pipex as he could not afford it. He is now stuck with this payment!

I use Networx personally to keep an eye on my usage, it is basically a program that monitors incoming and outgoing data and tallies it all up...so long as you stick within 400mb per day you should be fine.

But lets face facts here, that is absolutely nothing with the bandwidth heavy websites we have all over the place now, 10gb may have been alright for 10 years ago but it is woefully inadequate. To put it into perspective an average episode of eastenders on BBC iplayer will set you back 700mb, almost double your daily allowance!!

When you signed the contract you made an agreement to pay that charge for 18 months...I would phone them and though I know you cannot swap ask them to up your usage to about 20-40gb per month but to give you their best price.

Haggle, they will charge you a lot less and it is better to do this now than to get charged many times what you are paying for going over which is very easy.

I would far rather pay an extra couple of pounds a month for higher usage allowances than find I am being charged £1 for every 1gb I accidently went over, and it will happen because it is so easy to do.

When you get to near the end of your contract; about 4-6 months before put the feelers out on what deals other companies will give you and their best prices and then go back to your company for theirs...and go back out and ask what others charge based on those prices and repeat, and KEEP repeating until you get the best possible price.

Get it in writing and get a recording of the phonecall so they cannot claim they had no knowledge of the agreement. Though you will have to say you are recording it upfront...though since they record everything themselves "for training purposes" they will not be able to say no.

Thank you for the advice but since my Son has been in and out of Hospital for the last 12 months and rarely uses the Internet he is most unlikely to exceed the limit. I was being extra cautious as he has so little money and even 14 pounds a month
is quite a burden. Thank you again for the advice which is much appreciated.

Sky uses the BT socket which you must have as you use BT Broadband.

I have Sky TV (6 mixes plus Sports), line rental (£10.00 per month) and broadband (unlimited £7.50 per month)
