Need a new Internet Connection - CHEAP, unlimited, Fast & Reliable

Hi All,

I will be moving to a new flat in a few days’ time & need to sort out an internet connection. I need the cheapest possible option that I can get with unlimited downloads, reliable service & fast speeds. I will have to have a landline activated in the new flat. Currently, there is a plug/socket for the landline, but it's not activated. Hence I will need to pay for line rental once it is activated. Hence the cost of the line rental will also need to be factored in. I am not opposed to anything as long as it's the cheapest option available, fast, unlimited & reliable.

I am not interested in getting any TV deals & also thought that I should mention that I am a long-term Orange mobile customer. I have had a contract with them for almost 4-years now. Would that be an advantage? Also, my partner has a mobile phone contract with Talk Mobile. I don’t want to get mobile broadband, but assume that the fact that we have mobile contracts might get us reduced home broadband rates? Also, if it works out cheaper, we won’t be opposed to using fibre optic (if it's available).

If it's necessary, I can use topcashback.com.

My exchange details are as follows - http://www.samknows.com/broadband/exchange/WEWMAI

Thanks in advance for any help guys. Let me know if you require anymore information.

Cheers:beer:

Good selection available to you, cheapest possible would probably be plus.net

A lot will depend on your usage ammount and the times you download.

Alsoo the distance from the exchange will have an affect on the speed attainable.

Fibre expected September 2011 so maybe look for monthly contract

Thanks for that Steve... Would the overall package work out cheaper for me if I were to use Orange home broadband or Talk Mobile??

    Orange broadband, please no...
The obvious LLU choices on that exchange are O2 or Sky. All unlimited package are subject to FUP though, and the newer O2 tariffs are more restrictve.
An 02 mobile no will secure you a £5 pm discount with them.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

You've chosen probably the two worst suppliers from the list _pale_

Going through a few last night and Be is unlimited and will install landline but I cannot find how much, and you can have a 3 month contract (FTTC available in 6 months)

Sky(12 month contract)also unlimited and line install is £10 'til 24 March
    Broadband only is £15
    Line rental £11.25
Calls:(Either package will give you a rebate of £5.00)
    E/W Free
    Anytime £5.00
    So BB + E/w £21.25 p/month
    BB+Anytime=£26.25 p/month

    Sky via topcashback =£50.50

I would go with o2 broadband - Ive never had any problems with them. I download heavily, pay £10 a month because I have a mobile contract with them. Never had any throttling or downtime with them either. So if they still offering the same unlimited terms I got -they are the best to go for.

    Hi RoboDog

I have been with Orange 1yr no problems.
Changed to Talktalk 2yrs no problems.

Just changed back to orange as very good deal via Quidco.

    £11.50 line rental.
£ 7.50 Broadband and evening and weekend calls.
    First 3 months £7.50 free.
    £70 cashback from quidco.
Up to £50 refund of any charges from BT.
120min free call time without redial
    18mths contract.

Too good not to take up!

Switch from Talktalk to BT landline on 25th Feb and gained Broadband
    on Wednesday 2 March.

So I would go with orange via quidco.

  • "Reliable" and "Speed"

Virgin Media's cable is the fastest, it doesn't have any competition, and they can also do the TV if that's something you want. Pick 10, 20, 50Mbps or 100Mbps if you can get it.

For ADSL you'll be limited by what the phone line can manage, so between 150kbps and 20Mbps downstream. You can verify the estimated speed on www.samknows.com

Zen Internet have just won best ISP for the third year running and one of the factors was reliability in which they scored very highly, speed was another factor but again what they can acheive will be limited to the line's capability.

So Zen can do two out of your three. I don't think there is an ISP who can do three out of three. It's like many things - if you go with a cheap one and it works, then fine. It's when it goes wrong you then experience the "support" and then perhaps regret the decision.

The exchange is scheduled to have fibre laid this year, but not until September, and even when it is, there is no guarantee that your particular street will be able to get it, it will depend on which cabinets get upgraded. So it's probably not worth waiting although it might be worth picking an ISP who sells it. Zen is one.

I'd second Virgin Media too, if it's available. I've just checked my 10Mb line on speedtest.net and it reports 9.88Mb/s download and 0.98Mb/s upload speeds. It's generally like that too - very close to the rated speed and unlimited too. They do some fairly good value bundles. I have phone and broadband, don't bother with their TV as freeview is more than enough for me.
If you can't get it, check with BT if they are going to be providing fibre down your street. If it is coming, look for a shorter term ADSL that you can subsequently cancel. Don't go with Orange - the only thing you can guarantee is they won't be there when you need support!
