I'd go for the MPS, simply because I hate diesels, but to be fair, the 2.2d engine looks a cracking unit, and may even suit you better if lugging stuff around great distances.
Glad you don't like the subaru, I think you're supposed to live in a council house to own one of those :D

Why have you not factored the Octavia Vrs 2.0 Tfsi petrol hatchback?

It is a jack of all trades, Golf Gti based but has a massive boot, the 2.0 tfsi engine is punchy AND economical being direct injection. If you require more performance then get it re-mapped to 260Bhp but will still have the consumption of a 2.0 unless pushed.

The greater danger, for most of us, lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short; but in setting our aim too low and achieving our mark

Saab 9-5 isn't in the same sport as the mazda, let alone same league.

The skoda looks pretty good, but I personally wouldn't be able to get past the name (snob, moi?). Be like calling one of your kids, 'Adolf'.

cd, its a shame its a choice between one love of your life, or the other.

In my book, there is no such thing as a performance diesel, performance estate, or indeed, a performance automatic.

As i've said before, the definition of a sports car / performance car :-

A small low car with a high-powered engine; usually seats two persons

The term sports car has been defined as "an open, low-built, fast motor car." The term describes a class of automobile with two seats, two doors, precise handling, brisk acceleration, and sharp braking -- trading practical considerations such as passenger space, comfort, and cargo capacity ...

An automobile designed for high speed and power, tight handling, and flashy looks

but maybe i'm too much of a purist.

I hope you find what you are looking for.

    btw, i don't drive a Subaru

I reckon I'll have this conundrum in about 5 years!

Recently driven Honda Accord estate 2.2CDTI - punchy, fast, comfortable and spacious.

Skoda VRS Estate - I'd love one even now.

    Focus SMAX?

    Saab 9-5 estate 2.2TTiD?

    BMW 320D or 320 estate?

    Surprise yourself :D

The best car we've ever owned. 2 years in and this is the only car we haven't yet felt compelled to trade in, even after two big BMWs. Even with 2 kids and a big dog - we all fit, it goes like stink and it never fails to make me :D when I put my foot down. I can't have the dog and the shopping at the same time (he'd eat it) but there's room for either, and I've even driven a table and chairs 130 miles in it. There's so much more room in it than a regular MINI.

Thanks for some very helpful advice.

I'm not keen on the Subaru.. It just isn't me... I've never liked Scooby doos :)

Look at the Stagea that someone else suggested, though the MPG may put you off, also look at the Subaru Legacy which is really the only good looking Subaru IMO. In GT/B twin-turbo estate form they are a seriously quick car.

The other option to consider, of course, is two cars. For 10+ grand you could get a decent but boring diesel estate, eg. a Passat or something, and an MX-5 or 200SX for the weekend. MX-5 would be significantly cheaper to run out of those two.
  • Get a diesel estate ...... and a caterham for weekend fun ........
