The mouse has fallen in sink full of bleach water!Help!

He's a little field mouse.DH has taken him out to the woods a few weeks ago but he came back...or maybe its a different one.

I just went to pack the dishwasher and found him in the sink-which I filled earlier with warm water and bleach.

He's still alive so DH has taken him out-rinsed him with some warm water and put him in a box with a towel.DH says he cant kill him and I wouldnt want him to-we've been trying to get him out humanely for weeks.

What else can we do?Im such a softie when my pet rat died six years ago I couldnt go back in my flat for a week after and now I cant go in the kitchen coz thats where he is in the box:(

  • ermmm don't really know what to say, except why did you have the mouse anywhere near danger in the first place?

I could say alot more, but I'll refrain as this is a family forum
  • All I can suggest is put him in a warm, dark place to dry out and see if he survives. Put a biscuit in the box too. If he does survive then you can release him in a day or two but make sure it's along way away from your house or he'll be back!

Be warned that he'll be able to chew his way out of a lot of boxes!
  • Oh poor you, the only thing I would have suggested would be to rinse it but I fear he may has swallowed some and in that case it would be more humane to kill it, although I dont imagine it will last long if it has swallowed any. Maybe call the RSPCA and see what they recommend?

Maybe he was trying to look like a pet mouse so you would keep him :)

Oh bless you:) Thank you:)It did make me smile. He's been in the house for a while,on and off. Everyone said put poison down etc but we didnt want to and we've not seen him enough to catch him.

Im not allowed to have pets because of how upset I get when they go...like I said about my own pet mouse 6 years ago.
  • Ahh....I see :)

I hadn't realised you hadn't caught him. So this little man is a slippery character.

You are doing the best you can for him by the sounds of it. I guess you could get him checked out at the vets, but in my experience, most vets don't really have a clue about small mammals.

Just keep him warm, fed & watered. Try a little bit of bread if you have nothing else in that could be deemed suitable for the little man.

Depending on how long he was in the bleach mix / whether he inhaled any, and how stressed being confined is going to make him, then you have 2 options IMHO

1 - rinse him out, put him in a warm place to dry out with plenty of hiding places (eg old rat cage? bird cage, plastic crate with air holes etc, small cardboard boxes to hide in filled with shredded newspaper or similar) Offer water and food, leave well be, and see how he is in the morning. These wee wild mites often get VERY stressed at human contact and or confinement, and sadly his ordeal may well be enough to finish him off :(

So therefore option 2 - Is to give him a quick, clean, humane death, with the minimum of stress.

Good luck with him whatever you decide
I don't know half of you half as well as I should like, and I like less than half of you half as well as you deserve.

You really shouldn't be encouraging wild mice into the house, they can cause a lot of damage. You should have released him into the wild when you had a chance.
