British Gas Boiler Quote

Options
Hi,

I have just had British Gas here to quote for some work and was wondering how good a quote this is. The chap was very keen for me to sign up as apparently their prices are going up tomorrow by approximately £100 (for Copper costs etc he did show me the email), however, I did say I wanted a couple more quotes before I make a decision. So the below price may be £100 or so more.

Basically, we currently have two boilers (one for water, one for heating) which we intend to replace with one combi boiler for both. The work that will need to be done is as follows:

1. Remove both boilers
2. Fill and make good one flue hole (as the upstairs flue needs to be behind the boiler, rather than to the side of it) there is already a air vent above/behind the boiler.
3. Put in pipes in the corner of our kitchen, through the floor and upstairs to the boiler.
4. Powerflush the system.

The one thing it won't cover is making good the flue hole for the downstairs boiler, although we are considering keeping this for a ventilation hole (as it is in the bathroom).

The price all in is £2,918 if we get back to him tonight (which is unlikely), so it will be nearer to £3,118 as a worst case scenario.

The full quote is as follows:

1 British/Scottish Gas Worcester Greenstar 28iHigh Efficiency Combi Boiler - £853.62

Total - £853.62

Horizontal Flue Terminal - £198.42
Conventional to Combi Replacement Installation - £977.22
Connect Boiler Electrics and test - £162
Worc 28i Jnr/28SI MKII Fitting Loop - £14.82

Total - £1,352.46

Install Mini Pressure expansion vessel - £74.03
Install black plastic pipe (32mm x 3mtrs) - £35.47
Condensate waste to external soil pipe - £31.14
External condensate connection - £57.83
Clear route for installation - £132.00
Disconnect and remove unit/wall/water heater - £40.40
Install main earth bonding - £0
Waste collection and disposal - £42

Total - £412.87

2 year complementary homecare - Free (worth £480)
Install Hydroflow HS38 Scale Reducer - £140.41
System water treatment and powerflush - £327.60

Total - £468.01

Wireless programmable room thermostat - Free
Pair of angled manual radiator valves - £30.75

Total - £30.75

less point of sale deduction - £100

Net contract price (inc. VAT) - £3,017.71

I would appreciate any feedback on how good a quote this is and whether it is likely that this could be beaten by any other companies (we have Npower due to come in the next couple of weeks but he didn't rate them, unsurprisingly). I am also looking at getting at least one, but maybe two local firms in to have a look as well.

Thanks

Don't be bullied into anything just because copper may or may not go up. Youneed to get a couple of comparable quotes from independent installers. You may well save alotg more than £100.

BG are known to be expensive and use strong arm tactics to sign up asap.

  • We had ours done by a local plumber for less than half that.

BG boiler quotes are a source of much amusement on here, BG assume people still think that they have a good reputation and are prepared to pay more for the privelage of them fitting your boiler.

Get some local installers to quote for the job and I think you will be pleasantly surprised.

Over 125000 boiler installations last year is a pretty good reputation!

    Few things to consider...

Do you know a local installer that you can trust?

Have any friends/family had any work done that you can look at so you know what you are getting for your money?

If anything goes wrong who do you turn to and what assurances do you have that he will return to repair

If anything goes wrong on the job will it be put right? I.e ruined carpets/extra work etc?

I visited a customer who had a boiler fitted by a 3rd party and a year down the line they came back to BG for his First visit to come back onto contract. I reported the installer to GAS SAFE for installing a boiler that was dangerous due to him not upgrading the gas supply at the same time as the boiler.

    Beware

That quote you have should also be valid for a few weeks at least

Just out of interest, by upgrading the gas supply I assume you mean installing 22mm pipe from the meter to the boiler? And how would not doing this make it a dangerous installation?
  • I agree with last post, Is mattmk6 for real? this would be AR not ID and if the inlet pressure at boiler was 18mbar probably NCS, its hard to make a comment when I have not seen the install, but I think matt is new to the trade. I contracted off bg and they send us out flyers saying what working pressure was acceptable at diffrent types of boiler!! nothing to do with 1mbar drop across the system. bg rule to themselves. And matt over 125000 installs last year, how sad is that all those people getting over charged!! get a life and live the dream

The price is very high. Also there is no Filter for the central heating on that quote.
Clear route for installation - £132.00 Ask him what this is for. BG way of putting the price up so they can get a bonus for average order value.(this is 2 hours extra labour when the packs include the labour already)
2 year complementary homecare - Free (worth £480) Free anyway with most plumbers.

I worked in BG sales for a while ..Just remember most of the sales people are sales people with little tech knowledge...

X British Gas engineer and X BG sales adviser.
Please don,t let this put you off.

T'was this bit that made me laugh. Worth £ 480 indeed. Worth the square root of four fifths of fall IMO!!

    Cheers

  • I've just received a quote from british gas for a replacement boiler, it came to over £8,000. I live in an averaged terraced house.
The boiler costs just over £700.00 and the associated work account for the rest. I fell off my chair while the BG guy sat there with a totally straight face???
Is this really the price to replace a boiler these days???
