Please help me choose a SIM-only deal

Hi folks. I've just ordered myself a Samsung Makalu phone through Amazon and I'm now looking for a SIM to go with it. I won't use the phone that much to be honest so I don't need millions of minutes & texts. However I would like to be able to check my emails from time to time and so some data allowance would be good. Tesco are doing an offer at the moment with 3 which would give me 300 minutes, 3000 texts and 1GB data allowance for only £10 per month. Is this deal as good as it sounds? What are 3 like as a network? I'd have preferred to go with someone like O2 but they're more expensive for similar deals. I don't know much about mobiles and so would appreciate any help you can give. Thanks.

I should add that I live in the sticks and no mobile phone providers cover my house! That's okay though as I have a landline here and I spend most of the day in and around Dundee & Tayside which seems pretty well served by all the companies. Thanks again.

    giffgaff.

250 mins, unlimited texts and unlimited web for £10.

They piggyback of the o2 network I believe so wherever you get an i2 signal, you'll get giffgaff.

I've never heard of them before now. Seems a bit too good to be true though. There appears to be no contract so I'm unsure how I renew it from one month to the next. Also, from what I can tell I'll need to be beside the computer when I initially activate the SIM. This won't be possible because I can't get reception at the house where the computer is. Why is moden life so complicated?

Have a search of the board, a lot of people using them now.

No idea how the activation/payment works because I'm currently on contract with o2, will be off to giffgaff when it's finished.

  • Thanks folks. Well, I've signed up for the SIM as it seems I can do it without the problems I envisaged. I sure hope so as I really like the giffgaff ethos. Thanks to all who helped. I'll update this thread when appropriate.
  • well done giffgaff are great.

did you go via quidco for the cashback, or even better get someone on giffgaff to refer you then you get an extra £5.00 credit when you 1st top up and they get 500 points which is worth £5.00 at one of the 6 monthly payouts to giffgaff members.

Nope, didn't notice that until too late. Never mind though, I like the idea of all the benefits of a contract without the obligation. If it works out I'll stay with them forever.
