New house, boiler service companies

Recently moved into 1st house, when survey was done couldn't comment on boiler as it wasn't on. The seller left all the documents about the boiler, very old indeed, about 1977, off the top of my head anyway.

It's an ideal vulcan.

I dont know much about boilers as i am from Australia and we dont have central heating.

Since the whole thing about carbon monoxide, i went and bought an alarm and have it in the 2nd bedroom (the boiler is in this room, in a cupboard).

Now the alarm has never gone off. However i turned the heating off as i was warm and as i have a puppy, i close the doors on the bedrooms. Just opened the bedroom that has the boiler in and to me, i could smell gas, not strong, but i thought i could smell it. (never smelt it before when i leave the bedroom door open all the time).

Am i being stupid? Surely if CO was present the alarm would of sounded.

Never the less, as its old i wanna get it serviced, would a company service a boiler so old?

Also should i leave this bedroom door open all the time, as maybe closing it resulted in not enough ventilation.

If you have any smell of gas at all switch off your boiler and gas at mains, open windows to ventilate room, and call 0800 111 999 this is the Transco emergency service.

Gas can be extremely dangerous and a build up can cause a serious explosion. It is not the thing you take any chances with at all.

On the less serious matter of servicing it is probably bad news if you want a service company. British Gas are the major company in this field and I very much doubt if they would offer you a contract on such an old boiler as the parts will be very difficult to obtain; the same applies to most other companies.
