Cat has had his tooth removed

Aw, took my 8 year old tom to the vet this morning for a dental, and just heard he's had one of his canines removed, poor thing.
I know the vet will probably say, but is there a general aftercare for a cat that's had a tooth removed? I know how painful it can be for us!
thank you

aw sorry to hear your cat has had a tooth out *hugs* to the cat.0

mine has had all of his out besides his fangs and the little corncob teeth.
we were told just to treat him normally.
he still eats his dry food (and wet).
its been a few years and there wasn't any reaction to the actual procedure, and some of his issues cleared up.
they do fine without teeth - theirs are meant for riping, not chewing. My girl has all of her teeth, and i have never once seen or heard her chew her food - just cracks it and swallows. (however, she is a bit partial to chewing on string/ribbon.... which I take away from her the moment i catch her with some!)0 -
Thanks guys
He's had 2 removed. Poor baby, first time he's ever had any dental work. Cost quite a bit, but if the insurance doesn't cover it, our new vet said we could pay £75 per month.
He's just eaten some wet food, and is not quite himself yet, but I guess it's a big procedure. Vet showed me the stitches in his mouth, aaaaawww...DFD February 2012

My cat had most of her teeth removed eventually and manages fine, he was over the surgerys in 24hrs and eating almost normally the next day.. I think she has 2 or3 teeth left but she is 21 this year.. I laugh everytime I see that insurance advert with the dogs and dentures... maybe they do it for cats too#6 of the SKI-ers Club :j

I remeber our old cat having most of his teeth out, the vet said soft food till his gums healed, the cat walked straight into the kitchen and tried eating go cat, he didn't like the gel the vet gave me for his gums and as he tried biting me thought s*d ya, anyway he was back to normal in no time.0

thank you! He hasn't given me anything like gel to put on his gum, but has just eaten a little more wet food. We've put the biscuits away, and all 3 cats will get wet food morning and evening for the next few days. Was unsure about how much food I can give him after being put under, but the vet didn't advise anything, so guessing he can eat freely.
Just feel so bad for him, but hopefully now, if they were causing him pain, he will now be pain free, well, soon anyway.DFD February 2012

Feed wise, usually just a little and often - presumably he was starved before he went in due to the anaesthetic so you don't want to overload his tum.
When Demon Cat had his teeth removed, not all of them - still has his fangs (more's the pity!) and a couple of others, he was given an injection of pain killer by the vet to aid his recovery (and avoid the drama of getting a pill down a toothless cat's throat who will happily gouge your eyes out on a good day!). The injection lasts 1 or 2 weeks can't remember which - it's probable your vet has done this - if in any doubt just give them a ring.0 -
My Merlin had one of his canines out 3 weeks ago. He had an injection of painkillers and antibiotics which last for 24 hours. We had a weeks worth of antibiotic capsules we had to open and mix with his food. The painkillers made him quite spaced out and a bit wobbly and he ate loads (munchies?!). The upper canines go way up into the skull and, rather alarmingly, he bled a little from his eye socket. Vet said it was normal as long as not excessive or infected.
At check-up a week later he was fine, but tonight we have noticed his jaw is swollen again, so back to the vets in the morning.

Ah yes, he has had the injection (needle was still in leg when I arrived), so that's good to know, thanks.
No antibiotic tablets though. But I guess he's been given an injection for that too. Actually, i'm sure there's something on the bill that is probably that.
He keeps trying to rub is mouth on the side of things. I know that's usually a scent marker thing, but he's doing it more than usual, so probably a bit tender. Giving him lots and lots of attention and love, but just want him to lie down now and relax. He keeps sitting there (and licking paw where injection was). Maybe once we go down, he might start relaxing a bit more. My poor baby boy.DFD February 2012
