Product Placement - stealth advertising

_51299920_011256384-1.jpgmd_1273056248_krups-kp210240-coffee-machine.jpg

So product placement (or advertising by stealth) is now officially 'happening' in the UK. Nescafe has handed over £100,000 to have its Dolce Gusto coffee machine placed in ITV’s This Morning’s kitchen set over the next three months.

It's been going on for years with mixed issues springing up. From the obvious football in-yer-face boards, to the other end of the spectrum like arguments over cola branding caused in the film Grease {resulting the 'blurring' of the Cola signs in the Frosty Palace scenes}

Thing is, is it really welcome to advertise by stealth? I'm a pretty switched on and hardened anti-spammer, junk mail hater and advertising loather and even my kitchen has a Knife Man after seeing it in the background of a cookery program. So clearly it works at a subliminal level! Mind you, I own BT and Cisco phones for similar reasons....... Doh!

So, will this shift in the real estate of advertising, coupled with stretching out advertising time to up to 12 minutes per 30 minute block, be welcome or unwelcome? Thankfully it won't be happening on BBC - but commercial TV may just about to be get subtly worse.

Mind you - given the amount of years old repeats shown over, and over and over ad nauseum on ITV. It will probably be a number of years before we see much new stuff appearing on the screens that has been 'infected' with this new tool in the war on consumers......

    Do people really buy an item because they have seen it in the kitchen of a TV studio for several months ?
    If they do - they deserve to get fleeced !

    Believe me they do! I've bought pictures, prints and even a Voodoo Knifeman AND I'm an avid anti-spam,scam advertising dork.

    It really works, and it's very clever :eek: !

    I don't see the problem with it - we already have shows which are sponsored by products which I think is far more intrusive as you have their ads sandwiched in every break. We also have plenty of shows from other countries which have product placement, so it's not new to our screens. You don't have to buy anything you see advertised so I'm not sure how it's different from any other ad except that it's slightly more subtle (although sometimes the least subtle are the most entertaining).

    They've been doing it in movies for years, Nokia phones and Ford cars in the James Bond films, (James Bond in a Ford? :rotfl:) and Apple products everywhere.

    Product placement doesn't really bother me but longer and more frequent ad breaks does! :mad:

    Soon they'll be inserting occasional programmes between the ads, oh wait... Aren't they doing that now?|

    I feel sorry for Sky customers who PAY to watch adverts. PAYING for commercial TV, what's that all about???!!!

    An interesting thing with the 'sponsorship'. I stuck in a complaint - just for a laugh - about a well known furniture maker's sponsorship guff because it made some technically impossible claim (I forget what, but they were doing it in jest). I was surprised to hear back quickly from the ASA saying 'We have no jurisdiction over sponsorship inserts'. Mmmmm. I wonder if they have any jurisdiction over Product Placement?

    I will be sure to look out for product placement on my Sony Bravia TV, with its Bravia Engine technology and 100Hz motionflow, anything will look great.

    ...

    Football grounds have always had advertising and the bbc has always shown it on telly. Bit of a moot point..
